Wayland + Firefox, can't restore windows to correct location

This is honestly one of the biggest issues I have with wayland.

It can’t seem to remember my windows position, specifically firefox…
I have 2 windows up (or more), I quit firefox… shutdown… whatever

later I open firefox (with the setting to restore last session) and my windows end up all over the place, but obviously not where they were. I know it’s not a “big” deal, but this annoyance has turned me off wayland before. Is there some kind of hidden setting? I’ve even tried different “custom” window rules and it never works with firefox…

I don’t think it’s a Wayland issue, as I see the same behavior on an Xorg-based distro. (unless they’ve secretly changed to Wayland, but I doubt that!)

It annoys me to the extend I keep my PC running 24/7, sometimes for weeks on end, just to avoid having to rearrange my 10+ windows of open FF tabs.

I understand that the cause of this has to do with Wayland not allowing applications to set their locations (that’s the compositor’s job from my understanding) and Firefox is explicitly trying to do that…

But I really just want a solutions since this literally bothers me at least once a day :sob:

Gnome & Plasma have extensions to handle window positioning, if you’re on one of those

It’s bugged on both gnome and kde as well. Had issues with my ubuntu test environment and it’s also occurring on my primary desktop, bazzite with KDE.

Also have been encountering an issue with firefox, on bazzite, where the taskbar will become unresponsive, i.e. attempt close tab via gui nothing happens, but using keyboard shortcuts works. So far chromium appears to work with no problems. So not not sure where the root of that problem is and don’t have much time to troubleshoot as I’d like to.

That’s just your average KDE experience, it has so many knobs and features that sometimes stuff breaks, it feels like walking on eggshells especially on a bleeding or leading edge distro.

I’m on KDE plasma, what extension do you recommend for fixing the firefox bug?

You’re gonna have to find one yourself, I’m a gnomie

ok, well this isn’t ideal… but I have a janky solution…

In firefox you can download the extension “Window Titler

You can then name your windows…

I then named my windows FirefoxLT, FirefoxLB, FirefoxRT (for left top, left botton, right top)
I then made custom Window Rules to FORCE them to their location (I don’t really move these windows around)

I’m not sure if this is the best set up for it, but play around with settings to get what you like.

Wayland doesn’t let applications set their position, but it does allow them to set their size, so ignore requested geometry tells wayland to ignore that request.
