VMware workstation on Ubuntu 20.04: “This virtual machine is powered off or suspended”

Hi,

I have VMWare Workstation 16 Player installed on Ubuntu 20.04. Created a Virtual Machine and after it’s being setup I want to power it up. So when clicking on “Power On” the screen shows “This virtual machine is powered off or suspended” for very short period of time and then VMWare closes without any message. So I’m unable to power on the virtual machine.

Do you have any tips, advise on how to resolve this issue and be able to power up the virtual machine ?

Thank you in advance.

I’m not sure if you checked this or what the error you’d get is from VMware player on Linux but make sure you have the virtualisation instructions for your cpu enabled in uefi/bios

Can you give us some more information. Have VMs ever worked on this system?

The same happens to me on Elementay OS 15.7.1 (based on Ubuntu 18.04) and VMware 16. VMware running a VM ends always with message “This virtual machine is powered off or suspended” and is stuck on blank screen, to close this windows I need to force power off VM.
Virtualization has been always enabled in bios.
Virtualbox, on the other hand, works normally.

Did you ever figure this one out? I am having this issue as we speak.
