Hey all,
Suspect this is a very niche issue to have, will explain as best as I can!
I currently have two hard disks in my system; one with Windows 10 & the other on Ubuntu STS. I rarely use Windows other than for VR stuff, including gaming on a HP Reverb G2.
Having gained some experience using KVM Virtualisation using Virtual Machine Manager, I have installed Windows 10 as a Virtual Machine on top of Ubuntu. Having passed my second GPU through to this VM, my kids can now use the TV to play casual games without me having to abandon the PC.
I have since been trying to use my VR headset with this VM, again using VMM to passthrough the headset USB connection. However, I am not able to use the headset at all and Windows does not recognise the device (all drivers and such installed as per my functioning bare-metal W10 install).
The Error from Windows Mixed Reality is 7-12 which suggests the Headset is connected to an incompatible USB Controller. All drivers look good from the troubleshooting I’ve found for the headset, and the headset is plugged into my MB’s USB 3.1 ports (tried the other 3.0 ports, no dice either).
Can anyone give any pointers on how to get this working? Thanks!

I’ve ran into USB bugs on some devices when trying to use dynamic pass-though (USB redirector/SPICE).
I’ve had luck adding the device to the VM pre-boot (though this means you can’t boot the VM without the headset plugged in or removing the device and adding it again later when you want to use it)
With VM off and headset plugged in - Open the VM in (virtual machine manager) VMM, → show details button → add hardware button → select USB host device → select headset, → Finish → boot.
Many thanks for the reply.
I have tried both angles, and unfortunately they give the same result. Adding the device pre or post boot, either from the dropdown or the add hardware section.
Im curious where is your VR USB plug connected to?
Have you tried plugging the USB to the videocard itself?
The USB is connected to a Motherboard USB 3.1 port (of which there are 2). The DP is connected to the GPU passed through to the W10 VM. Unfortunately my GPU’s are not modern enough to have a USB C onboard.
Solved! Managed to Passthrough the USB controller for some of my Motherboard ports, but for some reason I still needed a USB3 hub for everything to work. So far all working well, highly recommended!
