VG 3D Model Exercises

I'm a aspiring indie video game dev. and I can't do it by myself, so my photographer/video editor/filmer/musician/artist/3D modeler friend (very artistically inclined if you can't tell) to help me and make the 3D models for the game, since its not quite at the stage of the game where I need his help yet we thought he should do some exercises that will give him the mindset, skills, and creative experience to make 3D models and environments for the video game

so I figure the best way to do that is have him recreate simple environments from previous video games as practice such as mario 64 and paper mario and work his way up in complexity as he goes say like stages from Banjo Kazooie/Tooie

what is your take on this, advice, or suggestions for game settings to recreate

the game will have fairly similar mechanics as paper mario and a setting similar of that of Link to the past if that helps

If you've got a target engine in mind, get him familiar with that. If he's new to 3d he'll have to learn the basics by following various tutorials to learn the software / techniques. Obviously there are huge differences in what's required if you're making a prop for a triple A shooter than a hand-painted sidescroller type game, but the basic skills (modeling, uv'ing, general understanding of technical aspects) will overlap.

custom engine, models will be imported in, he knows how to make them its just he's never used them to make a video game maps, just a model of the gym for a local highschool for the sports section of a local news station, the characters and Some of the gemetry will be sprites but a lot of it is 3D
