VFIO GPU passthrough: GPU Activity prevents boot

Hey all,

I tried booting up my VM with a GPU passthrough this morning and it won’t display anything to my monitor. I’ve made sure that the monitor is plugged into the right card and that the card is still in its own IOMMU group. I added a display spice to see what was happening and it gets to the “TianoCore” screen but gets stuck there. I noticed that if I unplug my monitor and boot up the VM again, it does actually boot into windows 10. If I plug the monitor in once it has booted, the VM sees the monitor but can’t display anything to it.

I’m passing through a GTX 1070 and in device manager, everything is working fine (no error 43). I’m really confused because if I tried making a fresh VM and it still has the same problem. This has been working for weeks I’m not sure what all of a sudden has happened.

Here is my config file for the VM

What port on the GPU are you plugged into? Do you have a DVI that you can try? Sometimes the GPU will only display on DVI.

Additionally, have you tried letting it sit there for a minute or so to see if it’ll boot into windows “headless”? I have that issue with my 1080, but once it gets to the login screen, I get video.

Lastly, try setting your vendor_id to 1234567890ab, sometimes a 12 bit value works better.

The 12-bit value worked like a charm… last night. I tried DVI and that worked great and then I tried using the display port on a different monitor and that started working like it used to. I was just booting up my computer to make sure it still worked and to thank you, but now despite the 12-bit value, now only DVI works. once it’s booted and logged in using the DVI input, if I plug anything into the HDMI or Display ports, the computer registers that the monitors are there but can’t display anything to them. I tried other bit values for the vendor_id to no avail.

Try using Q35 for the chipset

First try this. I can’t believe i missed that. Good catch!

If that doesn’t help, I would hazard that you’re in driver troubleshooting territory and that’s not something I’m very good at.

I made a new one with Q35, and now the vm is stuck in a boot loop. I have an SSD passed through to the VM with VirtIO drivers that has been in use for a couple months in this way. When I installed windows to it I was using i440FX chipset. Should I reinstall using Q35? Or is this a different problem?

And as always, here's the newest conf file for the new VM

Does it crash or error?

Quite possibly. How married to the windows install are you?

It doesn’t error at all. It gets through the boot animation fine and when it’s supposed to go to the login screen it just reboots and the whole process starts over again. And I’m not that married at all, I have it all backed up on an external hard drive. The only thing I would need to download were the virtIO driver iso and a new windows iso

I’d try it again then.

I reinstalled with the Q35 chipset and now I’m back to square one, where it gets stuck at the “TianoCore” screen. The windows loading circle doesn’t appear, it just hangs there. If I remove the graphics card altogether, it boots. I have tried with only DVI, and with a 12-bit value as well as 8-bit.

I don’t understand how for weeks and months this worked fine and only now it suddenly just fails when I haven’t changed anything

Did you install from the gpu or a virtual display?

Did you use a virtual display to verify that the gpu drivers are installed?

I installed from the GPU, on the DVI output. I dont have drivers yet as i have a slow internet connection and usually you can get a reduced resolution from the display even if you don’t have a driver (at least in my experience) so I was expecting only a very base function. Im downloading the driver now (although slowly) so by tomorrow I can see if installing the nvidia driver helps any

Under <features> try adding <ioapic driver='kvm'/>? Came across that at some point…

Ah, yes. That’s required.

That came with the qemu 4.0 update.

It worked at first, and I’ve been testing it for a couple days, and now only DVI works again. The Nvidia Control Panel sees the Display Port monitor but I can’t tell it to use it as a display.

On further testing I noticed that with the monitor plugged into the Display Port is used on boot and when windows is loading, but when I get into windows at the login screen, it can only use the DVI. There has to be something I’m missing.

I haven’t changed the configuration yet, so its the same as my last post.
