Using mods in games on Ubuntu

Hi Fam,

Title says it all. Trying to mod Skyrim / Oblivion Remastered edition. I use the non-snap version of Steam. The threads or YouTube vids I come across are either dated or opaque… either that or I’m just an idiot on the subject matter (likely).

Does anyone have a reference they’ve used that they can share. I think the most common referenced manager is MO2 so I need to read up on that as well.

I had some initial luck, getting vortex to work for skyrim mods, but it broke.

so, may be possible, but not solid / steady, and will break

Did you use bottles for that? How’d that work.

It very much depends on the Game and the Mod.

For some games you can just follow the install instructions of the mod in question, for others it won’t work no matter what you do.

It depends what DLL the mod hooks into, if one at all, or if the game has inherent modding capabilities (which IDK about Skyrim or Oblivion).

Hmmmm I see, sounds like this exercise is a bunch of hamfisting until failure after spending 4-5 hours on it. I’d totally be that guy.

Yeah, well, for games that don’t have a modding kit the modding community has to get creative how they hook into the game.

I don’t remember the exact details since it’s been a couple years, but I’ve had this experience with Witcher 3 (way before REDKit was released for it) where I tried installing a mod for some free-camera photomode (basically Ansel) and it would just not load in Linux while it worked fine on Windows. Turned out that this mod hooked into some audio-driver DLL (how and why, IDK, black magic or something probably), which wasn’t available in wine.

So yeah anyway… any given mod is Schrödinger’s Mod.
