Recently Linus on NCIXTechTips released a video comparing two R9 Nanos to a singe custom cooled R9 290x2.
The results were interesting showing the two Nanos pushing past the 290x2 in performance all the while using 80+ (if I remember correctly) less watts of power. So why would the 290x2 still be worth it at all? Well even though It is drastically less power efficient and makes for a great heater in the winter. (no joke I installed a hotter card last winter to stay warm)
Well It could be a great deal if the card could be had second hand in good condition with a good price slash. Even new it would still be a bit less than two R9 Nano's while only populating one PCIE slot unlike the Nano's while drawing less power take up more space.
What do you think? Would getting a second hand R9 290x2 be worth it for the horsepower?
So far I've always tried to find parts used rather than new. I could be wrong but I would assume people would be ditching their hungry 295x2's for 980ti's, Titans, or even just power efficient cards like the Nano. Which got me thinking
The thing about the r9 295x2 is that theres a hype about them because it is a dual gpu. I own a 295x2 so I know cf is working with newer crimson versions. It even increased performance about 15 to 25 percent. Where I live the price for a 295x2 almost doubled since the day I purchased mine about a year ago.
of course its worth it, just becuase its not the latest doesnt mean its not awesome, if you can find one at a good price id say go for it. i had a 7970 till about a month ago and that was still beast at 1080p
Beside the price drop of the 295x2 and the price to performace ration you should consider the really strict power requirements of the 295x2. If I remember correctly you'll need a pretty beefy power supply in order to provide the enough amperage and don't get fooled by the requirement of only two 8-pin PCI connectors. If you don't have a powerful enough power supply you shoud add that to the cost of the card.
well the nanos use HBM and they also run off a newer, more power effecient arcitecture, but if you can muster up the power, because that card alone needs 500 watts, then I say go for it because it's cheap for what it's got + you have a new heater for the winter
The problem is win 10 and the current crimson drivers and the comparing of two basically different types of tech. CF in win 10 and now we have a vid that is interesting. :)
