Unpopulated dimm slot on laptop motherboard

I suggested your attempt be posted on “Hackaday” and they did.

There are some good comments, but also some mean ones lol.

Good suggestions on unpopulated resistors in this thread! My opinion is that you should try a DDR3 tester like this one: [ item ID 184122198062 on the .com eBay version , silly forum won’t allow links]. Laptop repair techs use these for debugging DDR3 slot connections, and it seems like you’d be able to instantly see - are the usual signals present? I’d recommend you first insert it into the original slot, see how the LEDs look, and then insert it into the new slot - see what the difference is, whether any lines look different… I’m not sure if it’d point out missing terminations/pullups/whatever, but my impression is that it should point out something if your hardware differs - maybe even LEDs glowing at different brightness.
