Hey guys!
I'm building a NAS (ZFS + FREENAS and such) and I got a ASUS M5A78L-M PLUS motherboard on the cheap to hook some old hardware that were lying around but don't know what to do about ram, specifically ECC ram, never worked with those and I'm afraid to buy something that won't work with the rest of the hardware. Any sugestions or thoughts on what should I get?
i run regular ddr3 in my nas4free server. its a asus fx990 sabertooth board with a phenom II x2 . it runs fine and is almost always at 400MHZ or so.
I built a few AM3 machines and IIRC, I don't believe that ECC is supported by the chipset.
I find that G.Skill tends to be responsive. Send them an e-mail and they'll be happy to make a RAM recommendation for you.
You can use DDR3 ECC UDIMMS according to the Asus webpage for that motherboard.
https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/M5A78L-M-PLUS-USB3/specifications/
There is no ECC UDIMM modules that are officially validated, but ECC support is listed on the Asus webpage for the motherboard. As such I can't validate which dimms will work, but in theory those listed below should be compatible.
ECC support is handled by the memory controller that is on the cpu die natively in this case. The motherboard in question does have the 9th 'lane' or whatever to support ECC, and it appears that Asus is supported it in bios, so it looks like it will work.
You'll need unbuffered ECC DDR3 RAM since consumer AMD motherboards don't support Registered RAM.
Normally I'd say to look at the memory support list put out by the manufacturer, but it doesn't look like it doesn't have much in the way of ECC options.
One option I've used in the past was Crucial's Advisor Tool.
Here's a result it popped out:
Thanks for the replies and sorry it took me so long to see it... things happend and my little project was left aside.
Now, i cheked the suggestion you guys gave and some more because options are kinda limited in stores over here in brazil.
this is one i was able to actiualy find (amazon link for convenience):
it says for hp servers, but is unbuffered so... what you think?
i think you should head over to the kingston site and use their ramfinder to find hte correct ram for your particular server.
this ram works in the ML series (well most of the older ones anyways), but not in many of the others. it would work in my ML310e v2 , but not in the HP Proliant DL320 DL360 DL380 G6/G7,etc.
For AM3+ that ram tool kingston has won't work, as ECC Unbuffered is not really officially validated, although there and works.
If its kingston, ECC unbuffered DDR3, it should work fine.
This. Go for it. Chances of running completely fine are very very high.
