Tray cpu Vs. none tray cpu?

ok so i was looking around online on pcpartpicker and new egg then i found some thing that sorta caught me off gaurd and i was hoping some one can make sense of this madness

I believe the main difference is that one does not come with a stock cooler(tray version), and one does.

Box means exactly, that the CPU comes with a cooler. Tray comes without cooler and you will have to buy one. Otherwise it's the exactly same CPU.

I always ALWAYS recommend buying box CPU, even if the plan is to have another cooler. If something goes hairy with the aftermarket cooler, you always have the box one to unhairy yourself.

The stock heatsink for the FX-8350 is completely useless anyway so its relevant pick up the tray vershon if its cheaper (allso knowen as OEM)

i used the stock FX8350 cooler, for more then a year. And it did a decent cooling job on my FX8350 @ stock speeds, But yeah the noise under full load is terrible.

But the noise was not that terrible as in that movie.

so wait let me get this straight.....pay more money to not get a cpu cooler? that doesn't make sense

if you are tight on cash, i would allways recommend to buy a boxed cpu, because you can use the stock cooler for now. and spend the money you saving on a more beefy GPU, cause that still makes more sense for a gaming rig.

You can allways replace that stock cooler for a better one later on.

ah well i do have a after market cpu cooler xigmatek gaia

Then you are fine with a Tray cpu.

Only thing that could be tricky with that particular cooler is that it does not have a flat surface, so thermal paste should be applied very carefully. But you probably allready experianced that.

The Pie method will probably not work very well with that cooler.

The real difference between a tray CPU (one without heat sink, docs, etc.) and a boxed CPU is the warranty!

Boxed CPU's usually have much longer warranty periods and are often backed by the CPU manufacturer (Intel, AMD, etc.). Whereas a tray CPU, sometimes called a "stock" CPU may have a much shorter warranty period (if it even has one) and is usually only backed by whoever sells it.

It's weird, I know. Because both CPU's are made by the same company and operate exactly the same way too (assuming we're talking about the same model/version and all). But when you think of it like a used car versus a new one, that used car may simply be "used" all because it has 100 miles on it.
