To Logan (and his complaints about ISPs)

Sooo. Let me start off by saying that i am a big fan of you guys since 2 years if not longer.

But i've realized that you are complaining a lot about ISPs in US and laughing at what is happening in Australia. But.. Well, the copper. If there was a bit more ISPs with a little coverage like this one in Poland i wanted to share something about, i think that would make more sense.

So basically this one have a coverage of around 1 kilometer (yeah, google that up :D ) and is using direct rj45 connection to their customers. The price is funny (something around 17 USD a month) and you get guaranteed 300Mbps uplink and downlink. What i've seen today made me write this post here.

And i need to mention that every year they are increasing these speeds and decreasing price.

Here is the speed test:

This is located in the city of Poznan, in Poland.

If you ever considered moving here, just let me know :D

(also ping me if you ever read this one or broached this on your Tek episode)

Peace!

i am pretty sure you confused the parts of the globe :D

Can I just cry now? I get 75 down 6 up......................................

no you can't because your not stuck with 5mb/s down and 1mb/s up like most people who live in rural united states.

Well that's great internet... But how expensive is it to live there?

Hmmm I wonder....Does CD projekt have any open positions?

and is using direct rj45 connection to their customers.

I don't think so.

This post confuses me, whats it all saying?

It is kinda cheap. Let's say you need around 3500 PLN which is according to current state 967.06 bucks. And the women :D

I am not sure. But well, you need to be really good at the stuff. Not sure if they have their own engine but if so, be prepared for maths and stuff

This is like you have a server at home and trying to share your internet via standard ethernet cables. Majority of ISPs are trying to get all-in-one to their customers and therefore they're forced to have asynchronous internet - some of the band has to be used to provide TV and so on. Anyway there's not much ppl that would need good uplink bandwidth. And yeah, just rj45 in the drilled holes of the skyscrapers. Telling the truth here ;)

Not too shabby i'd say. I hope you don't use netflix xD

It is enough. I was just trying to spread the word on what is happening in weird central european countries ;)

Ah ok. So the whole building is connected to the same network? With each apartment having a Ethernet connection to that network? Do you have a choice of ISPs or does the building have one ISP?

My reasoning for saying it wasnt right was because you wont have an Ethernet connection from your apartment to the ISP, it will terminate in the building somewhere and connect to the ISPs equipment probably using fibre.

They do actually. Witcher 2 was the first with it. Too bad I am a hardware designer and i do not stick well with either the gaming or the GOG.com stuff.

I pay $20 a month for 10 down and 1 up (when 3ish people hop on the network everyone watches YouTube at no more than 240p (Everyone in the house has smartphones we have 2 laptops 2 main pc's and a TV stream box) The next option for 20 down and 2 up is around $50 .... I live in Houston, Texas the friggin Energy capital of the World.

I think what he's saying is that the ISP only covers 1km, so they quite literally run CAT6 to each customer straight from their main switching center. If memory serves me right, CAT6 can push up to 10 gigabits, so they could actually feed multiple customers from a single CAT6 cable.

As far as the customers all being on the same network, I imagine each customer gets 1 public IP address to use and they probably use a router of their own. I doubt an ISP would hand out 10.0.0.0/8 addresses or something, they could cause a lot of problems with that...

Cat6 still has the same 100m limit (less if your using 10GB-T), so even if the ISP is in the middle of that 1km radius there's still 400m of missing cable. So there has to be some sort of other infrastructure, which is what I was wondering about.

Ah. Well I assume they probably have a "magic fiber box" thats just a cable modem for fiber I suppose. But that's outside my scope haha I don't own any optical anything except eyeglasses

Looks like Poland stepped up in the recent years.

I remember my relatives there couldn't use skype for video calls years ago... and now it it the other way around with Verizon throttling my connection. It 'supposed to' be 75/75 which is still light years behind you. And yes, I pay extra for this :(
