TIL: Firefox Anti-fingerprinting protection disables saving of window positions

If any of you have turned on Firefox’s anti-fingerprinting option, you will notice the window position each time you launch Firefox is a generic one that seems to not update when you maximize, then close the window.

Believe it or not, this is on PURPOSE.

Viewport resolution is something that can be tracked with analytics, so Firefox decided to prevent that variable from saving each time you exit with the anti-fingerprinting option on.

The more you know.

That’s a useful bit of info. Thanks!

The tor browser is the same way, it just opens at a random resolution not a preset one.

Yup window sizes and or screen resolutions are indeed collected,
as digital finger prints.

That’s why I don’t have it turned on, the anti-fingerprinting makes the browser essentially unusable. It’s not entirely clear why they can’t just tell the website you’re using a standard viewport, or perhaps round-off the viewport to the nearest 100 pixel value so your fingerprint is markedly less unique.

Good to know.
But if you’re on a 1080p monitor (or another common screen resolution) aren’t you already kinda hiding in plain sight?

Edit for typos - smart phones suck for typing…

Depends if your browser windows are set to open maximized or not…

Yup hence why I have counter measures to this.
