Threadripper 9000 1Rx4 48G Hynix 6400 OEM compatibility > DDR6000

Hi I am considering to upgrade to 9980X form my 7960X.

Ability to run memory at higher speed is important as my FEA workloads scale with memory speed.

I have 192G of below 1Rx4 Hynix OEM memory rated at 6400. But the best speed I get get is 6000, I tried everything trust me, it will refuse to post above that but be totally rock stable at 6000. Has anyone been able to run 1Rx4 48G RDIMM above 6000 speed, or any 1Rx4 RDIMM for that matter my hope is that TR9000 may be able to run faster, I may need to go to a more conventional 2Rx8 RDIMM to get higher then 6000? The reason was that for the money these OEM DDR6000 1Rx4 48 G DIMM were the best value.

FYI thermal is not an issue as I am running them water-cooled, they are under 50 deg C even at 1.435V.

Note that the timings on these are actually really good, and latency is also good 76ns in MLC and also BW at 185G/s is like the best I have ever seen for DDR6000, only weird timing is tWRWRSCL is high at 36, but all the others are in with the best A-Die parts.

this is what I was talking about in the video. jedec 6000 or 6400 in your case isnt the same as expo. your ram doesnt have expo. you’re going to have to manually set the timings. technically above 5200 is an overclock on the 7960x but they relaxed things a bit so you could run jedec 6000 but from the 7000 series its still a bit of an “oc”.

you might have an “innocent” setting like 1:1 fabric clock set which would also prevent the 7960x from posting @ 6400

I believe they are dual rank. Most if not all dual rank dimms show up SR in zentimings. Look at the PCB. If you see chips on both side of the PCB, they are dual rank.

I did try to run them at stock lose timing as well and they just will not post. Even tried loser then JEDEC. I also tried some conventional DDR 5600 2rx8 32G Hynix OEM sticks and they will happily run at 6600mhz, so I know the HW can do it.

It maybe bios or AGESA limitation for these rare 1r4 48g config is my feeling, that may or may not be fixed in TR 9000. Note that 1rx4 means that each IC had 4 data lanes. so you need double the IC as x8 IC’s, hence why they are double sided but still 1r.

Advantage is that there is only a single IC loaded to the memory controller and data lines, so they all things equal can run at fast speeds.

I posted very well tuned setting, to show they they can actually run impressively low timing, with some oddities like WRSCL at 36. Also to prove they are 1r you can see all the dual rank timing set to 1, if they were 2r then that would not post. Been running these timing for about 5 months and they are rock stable, TR is great, as long as it posts it seems the system just never crashes.

tRFC is very low, about 50 lower then any A/M die I have run. 320 is stable for about 24h, but it was so low I was afraid to run it so I just set it to 352 so no need to worry about it. I guess these IC may be new.

FYI got a new CPU 9970X and the RAM can run at 7200 CL38-42-38-42, and I can get about 220G/s read, and about 88ns in Intel MLC, and about 80ns in ADIA. So this odd ball 1r4 192G setup can do decent speeds on 9000 CPU. Needed to run lower voltage on SOC 0.95V (auto), as well as VDDIO 1.1 V (auto) VDDP 0.925V (auto) to run above 6400 FYI.
