Threadripper 7000 Home Server Build Questions

Hello,

I am looking to build a new home server/gaming rig and I had a few questions regarding my parts and software setup. I would appreciate any comments or thoughts on my build in general as well

Background

I am a Machine Learning Engineer so I use my current computer for development but I additionally have a PCIE passthrough setup for both CUDA and gaming on Windows. I have a NixOS host a NixOS VM and a Windows 11 VM.

I’ve decided to upgrade from my Ryzen 3900x because I don’t have enough PCIE lanes to accommodate the number of NVME drives I would like and I figured I’d go all out.

Questions

Hardware

  1. I’m buying a watercooler for my server case. Since there is only one intake in a server chassis do I need to buy 3 more fans to have a push pull setup or is that overkill?
  2. I think the PSU I’m buying is overkill but I want to have sufficient overhead given the parts I’m using. What are the consequences of using a 1000va UPS with the power consumption requirements of my build? Will the UPS limit how much power is being drawn from it? Or will it simply not guarantee that it could provide backup in the event of a power failure? I would get a larger UPS but I’m not sure it’s worth it unless I move to a 20amp breaker which I can’t do.
  3. I’ve looked at different kits of ram and I just want 128GB of ECC registered. I’ve heard others on reddit and here recommend this kit but is there anything else I should be aware of when looking for a kit of RAM? I know Wendell explains that choosing RAM is not as simple as whether or not it’s compatible on paper.
  4. Given that I have a SAS drive with a U.2 interface is having that in addition to 2 Gen 5 NVME SSDs with another gen 4 NVME compatible with the number of available PCIE lanes?
