Thoughts on girlfriend's budget gaming PC

Hey guys,

I just wanted somebody's opinion on two builds I've set up for my girlfriends rig.

She is constantly playing Sims3, which I know could probably be run on phone hardware, but her laptop is now nothing more than a fire hazard, which is permanently connected to a cooling table just to get it running.

She has also started playing some of the games I play and is really enjoying them. Games like Skyrim, Dragon Age etc. Basically any decent RPGs out today.

So with in mind that she is basically using a desktop anyway, and that her laptop would explode into a million pieces if she tried to play my games on her computer, I decided I'd put her a desktop together.

Her other requirements were that she wants a mini tower. She hates the size of my case.

Build 1 (intel):

  • Intel Pentium g860 3.0ghz Dual Core CPU
  • ASRock B75M mATX board (cheapest with sata3 and usb3)
  • Patriot signature single dimm of 4gb @ 1600mhz
  • Coolermaster Elite 343 mini tower case w/420w PSU
  • Gigabyte GT630 2gb graphics card
  • Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm HDD

Build 2 (AMD):

  • AMD (APU) a8-3870 (not k) 3.0ghz quad core with 6550 radeon GPU
  • ASRock A75M-HVS (again cheapest with HDMI and sata3)
  • Kingston HyperX 1866mhz 8gb kit
  • Coolermaster Elite 343 mini tower casew/420w PSU
  • Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm HDD

I originally went in only thinking of the intel build but I've heard a lot of people are using the AMD apu for budget gaming rigs so I made one up to compare. The AMD build with the extra 4gb and faster ram is still about $50 cheaper than the intel build.

My question is, how comparable is graphic/gaming performance between the two builds and is it worth the extra $50 for the improved general performance of the intel? Mind you she only really web browses, does word processing, and plays videos/goes on youtube etc. so never really does any power intensive activities, and if she ever did need to my computer is sitting right next to it.

Which one should I go for?

Thanks guys.

Neither are really going to be graphical power houses. What's  your budget look like?

It doesn't need to be, just enough for her to play it without it looking crappy.
The budget is about 300-400 although the cheaper the better.

I think the APU is a better option, especially since you can hybrid crossfire it for not much money.

The apu can crossfire with a 6670($50)

That's a really good point guys, for the difference cash wise between the two I could crossfire.
I think the AMD is the way to go, thanks very much!
