Thinkpad X1E BIOS locked underclocking

I am trying to re-enable overclocking on my gen 4i Thinkpad x1extreme. (i7-11850H). I found a guide on how to do this here : https://www.reddit.com/r/Lenovo/comments/id0457/guide_to_reenable_undervolting_after_latest_bios/
Other people with laptops locked down against the “plundervolt” vulnerability have similar issues.

I was able to find the variable in the BIOS file that locks overclocking, and using grub_setup_var (GitHub - XDleader555/grub_setup_var: Patch for grub allowing tweaking of hidden EFI variables) I am attempting to change it, just so I can get the power and heat down a bit on this very problematic machine.

I am running into an issue, as it seems that the BIOS/EFI doesn’t allow itself to be edited.

I’m not trying to anything more than one variable in the BIOS, would anyone know how I can make the EFI allow editing it? I tried another solution to edit the BIOS called RU.efi but I can’t get it to boot to it.

Is this a lost cause? I’m trying to avoid using some kind of third-party BIOS or get too deep over my head here, but this laptop has been nothing but a disaster of constant overheating/throttling since I bought it.

Attempting to physically read, write, and modify the BIOS chip on the motherboard using an AMI BIOS SPI programmer requires specialised soldering equipment and operational expertise, presenting a high degree of risk.

I’m not flashing the BIOS chip, I’m trying to change a variable with software
