Well we could also (magically) have sent a 3D printing robot Into space and start having it build structures. instead of a car (with a robot in it)

At the moment Musk has humans teaching the robots how to build in 1gā¦ next will be 0g so they can work the asteroid beltsā¦

The problem with a barrier is the same.problem as a dyson sphere, it is impossible to keep a sphere gravitionally centered and rapidly becomes unstable and crashes into the planet it should be shielding.
Same with rings, the only one so far that makes practical sense in that regard is a sawm of satalites to make an analog of what the barrier/dyson sphere would do though with each free to correct with out pulling the structure.
Though if you want a barrier and are considering that as part of the planā¦ Why move at all. Why not just build whatever barrier/sphere and they will almost certainly have literal world changing implications for our energy collection needs.
