You might want to consider DietPi for that use case.
Sounds like a fun idea; and pretty low cost.
Before investing in the solar& battery and stuff, I’d try it indoors off wall power first, then run it outside off an extension cord… Then mess with batteries and such?

mmWave presence sensors are now readily available. I’m putting together a smart home for the first time too and I considered the Sonoff one.
I decided for Zigbee over MQTT. Seems to be the solution most Zigbee devices support.
I found THIS website that lists devices and compatibility with different Zigbee communication types in Home Assistant.
They also work just as fine in A+E key slots on x86 machines. If I’m ever gonna do CV with a Coral TPU I’ll get a USB one to make my life easier.
