The small linux problem thread

Is Fedora 31 any good?
Thinking of upgrading, but I wanted to wait for gnome extensions to get updated before upgrading.

Main ones I am using in order of importance for my daily usage

dont think F31 has launched yet.

It came out yesterday

I saw it in software center, so I wasnā€™t sure if I waited long enough or if people had issues

As far as upgrades, people from here https://www.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/dp7lm3/upgrade_to_31_experiences_thread/ are posting their experiences.

  • It appears that dash to dock is broken and there is a bug report on it. To fix it uninstall then reinstall the program.

  • Many people report 0 upgrade issues

  • Gnome is faster

Aw, crud. That means I have to upgrade from F29 since itā€™ll be deprecated soon. Just have to hope that none of the dozen or so repos Iā€™ve installed donā€™t trip up the upgrade.

Any hints on minimizing the chance of the upgrade cratering?

Backup your files.

Follow steps to update to f30 from f29.
Relax for another 8 months

Upgraded my parents two systems and it went fine, already had plank installed from the 29 to 30 upgrade so no need to worry about extensions.

Been running the beta plasma version on my desktop and laptop for a few weeks and itā€™s a solid release.

Fresh install of Fedora 31 Server on an ESXi VM. The only things Iā€™ve done to the system are take a snapshot of OS partitions, change the grub user in /etc/grub.d/01_users and set a password with sudo grub2-setpassword. The same procedure works fine in CentOS.

I am getting this when I run sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

And then it hangs there forever. The last line is an LVM snapshot and is expected. I also see grub2-probe: error: ../grub-core/kern/fs.c:120:unknown filesystem. on CentOS 8, but only once and the command succeeds shortly afterwards.

All that said, when I reboot, the new grub credentials are in placeā€¦

Rolling back the snapshots results in a system that wonā€™t boot, so I guess itā€™s just the snapshots.

works on 31

works on 31

doesnā€™t work, but it was broken on previous versions
this is a suitable replacement
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1225/wallpaper-changer/

broken on 31, but isnā€™t mission critical

also can someone link me a guide or video setup to change the boot menu? In previous versions, a menu would show up with all the operating systems I had.

I have two separate drives for windows and linux

Iā€™m having trouble with VPN, specifically the PIA app, on open suse. The installer says ā€œifconfig not installed, please make sure net-tools-deprecated has been installed and symlink ifconfig to /sbin/ifconfigā€.
The deprecated net-tools were not installed, so I installed them. When trying to symlink the file, it fails and says it already exists, which it does. Installer says the same thing when trying to re-install. Installation goes fine and I can launch the app just fine but canā€™t connect to any server.
What am I missing here? Is the error in the installer even related? What else could be wrong?

Was it a fresh install? Which network manager?

I havenā€™t tried Suse, only ā€˜buntu and fedora with PIA, and did not get that

[edit:]
I presume you already googled it and came up with the Reddit post that mentions the atm Linux, and later about the Firewall block?

I did not come across such post, please link. Installation is fairly fresh. Have Yast and Network manager, the latter of which seems to be in control of the settings. (KDE)

Hmm, network manager in Ubuntu too :frowning: well, so much for easy ones

So I symlinked the rest of the files, like in that post, no cigar :frowning:

From systemlogs:
ā€œethtool: autonegotiation is unset or enabled, the speed and duplex are not writable
ethtool: could not get ethtool features for tun0
Could not set offload features of tun0: No such deviceā€
Manager say ā€œnew device: tun0ā€ just beforeā€¦ Tried with autonegotiation on/off. Any ideas?

Can someone give me a quick reminder on how to configure the DNS search domain on CentOS 7? resolv.conf getā€™s overwriten automatically. I know that DNS Servers are configured in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* but am clueless where to change the search Domain.

Edit: nvm. If it comes up for anyone: nmtui is a console tool to configure network connections. Itā€™s preinstalled on CentOS.

Itā€™s in nmcli somewhere

whatā€™s the difference? nvm, google to the rescue
