So i have tried a couple MMOs and they all were good for about a couple weeks some even a couple months but in the end they all get repetitive and boring or the population starts to die out, and i was wondering why?!
i love to play games even tough im not a hardcore gamer but the games i love are MMos, i love a big comunity, PvP, Guilds, massive worlds to explore and beautifull scenery ( doesnt have to be the best of the best graphics but good looking ), but i wonder, why is it so hard to make a good MMo? are the steps so hard? are we limited by our imagination? or better said, the developers imagination?
i play FPS Moba's and one or two other types of games but my top one is MMo's or better said AN MMo, just one to immerse yourself into, something that feels good to play, good to build comunities on and just play for a couple hrs.
in any of you guys opinions, wich are the best MMos out there you guys like? and what would it take to make a Perfect one that everyone will wanna play?
LotRO is getting better and better. Back when I started, they were really good, then they dipped into the casual market, but now they are back into the hardcore/good gameplay market.
Community is great, story is great, and they are revamping the skills/traits (minibuffs specific to each player)/animations.
I'd give it a go, they are offering 4 (Level 30-85, as level 1-30 is free) expansions for $39.99, you really can't go wrong.
No such thing. At least for me. I can't imagine anyone making an actually good MMO, that would require an impossible budget and would be extremely hard to design.

well, as ive read in some articles on google, the starting cost to develope a regular MMO is around 40 mil, some other recognized mmos like Tera , SWTOR and lineage II they say it was around 100 to 200 mil, i cant confirm this but those are rough number to take in mind, GTA V cost 250 million as ive heard everywhere and it made over a billion in 3 days, thats amazing, if they took 400 million to develope a great, an EPIC! MMO even if its F2P, it could bring inn TONS of money by the day, if i had only 400 million dollars to my name one day, i would put 399 mil into making an mmo, 1 mil so i can eat during development xD
i dunno if im saying this right but would an Open source MMO be any good? as in people able to look at the code and such, so people who play it and have knowledge can fix bugs and maybe add features? hummmm.....
WoW , LoL <--- see what i did there? huh?! did ya!? lol
thats an insane amount of money xD i can see companies going for 300 mil for a brand new game but 1 bil? xD wow juust wow, we wont see that until VR MMo's exist lol
While it seems like a good idea... but sadly, I don't see it lasting very long... I mean whats to stop somebody from editing the code so a lvl 1 (or 1 hp, for that matter) monster drop max lvl super-duper rare (by normal standards) weapons/equips/items at 100% drop rates? While it would take the fun out of playing said mmo... however, I think people would do this more, than the "bug fixing / adding features" part...
I honestly though Earth Eternal was going to be the perfect MMO. I hung around for the game for so lng, about a year I think, I was one of the core members of the forums, had my character all planned out, followed every little bit of it, and when I was selected for closed beta, I was so stoked. I started playing, and it was basically what I was expecting, but it was just rather underwhelming, and I stopped playing soon after. looking back now, I would probably get really into it, but I think it went under pretty quickly which is a shame.
Don't laugh at my friend for saying this, but he loves wizard 101. He plays it everyday and he has put $100's into that game. He says at first the game is infested with little kids, but once you hit the higher levels, the grind begins. I have yet to try it so I personally have no opinion on it.
I personally thought the Stargate MMO would of been cool... But that idea died a long time ago...
My perfect one would be space/fantasy themed mmo... where you play as futuristic races and can travel the stars in spaceships, land on various types of planets from ones in the middle of an Ice age, to Medieval ones where dragons exist, to modern day, to high-tech... and so forth...
Also have it as a galactic rule of the game where you can't equip/use higher-tech than that of the civilization of the planet... so you couldn't bring a lightsabre to go fight dragons on the Medieval planet, you'd hafta get a sword. Theres no magic in modern society planets, but you could fight that dragon with magic...
Its kind of a Mass-effect/EVE online/Star Ocean -esque type... MMO
give people liberty to do as they please with the source code
and you will be amazed at how it turns out.
maybe at first they will do all this maxing out their account but like you said, whats the point and fun in it, they will get bored and true players who wanna build somethign amazing will come out.
someone should get the ball rolling with this, would make a fun project even if it fails miserably. :D
