You harvest what you sow
Not trying to defend Trump in any way, and there is no excuse for what his administration is doing. Still think that society needs to finally understand one thing:
You need to speak up against wrongdoing, even if it is against your enemy.
You know why? Because you can bet your ass, that everything your side does wrong, the right will do the exact same but turn the nob to 11.
Society did not give a damn about cancel culture in the past. People said
- cancel culture did not exist
- cancel culture is a right wing conspiracy
- cancel culture isn’t cancel culture but free markets at work
Society did also not give a crap when Google or Meta were influenced by the government during covid. And now we wonder why Trump does the same with other topics like aborting on Meta?
Remember the braindead saying “freedom of speech, isn’t freedom of reach”?
Which is btw the modern Chinese Strategy of censorship?
Chinese will say “Censorship? What censorship? You can see post Z, there is not censorship, it is just that your post nobody will ever see because the algos suppress its reach. What a shame”
So to all my fellow free speech proponents, where were you in the past?
Where were you when we decided that instead of judges, we let Meta and Google decide what free speech is?
Where were you when we coined the term “hate speech” just to distract from the fact that we already have laws in place against “illegal speech” and don’t need to come up with that stupid excuse?
Where were you when Youtube started to demonetized stuff like “suicide” and we changed to the Orwell newspeak “unalived”?
Society did also not give a crap when the FCC did way more than just handing out frequencies like in other countries but dictates what words are allowed on TV.
As of right now, society does not give a crap when UK or Germans get their house swatted in the morning, because they said something stupid on X. Even when there is zero urgency.
“Well, it is a right winger, why should I care? I bet he deserved it!” people will say as an excuse.
Feel free to say and act in that way. Just don’t act surprised if the weapons you hand out or tolerate know, will be turned against you tomorrow!
So yeah, Trump is spot on when he compares the UK plans to China! Even an idiot can sometimes be right.
And if society would actually care more privacy than about “who said it”, we would all applaud Trump for pointing it out. Unfortunately, scoring cheap political points has become more important than actual policy, so I know this will not be the case.
