SystemD adds Age Verification & r/linux bans those talking about it

Kind of a new development of the age verification requirements previously discussed here.

Wow Lunduke getting old I barely recognise him

Popcorn.

Welp, that is pretty messed up. But I guess not surprising at this point. And of course it’s SystemD. That’s just perfect.

Thing about systemd is my claude code uses it for my bullshit and sure I bet it could be used to be sexist too. Its a tool only.

Like a hammer, it a builders tool and a murder wepean.

I remember when I first started using Linux systemd had a pretty bad wrap in the community. I have gotten my fair share of systemd errors that made me reinstall my OS.

I had to look it up, but tl;dr seems to be against the Unix philosophy of doing 1 thing very well

Someone linked this while browsing the KDE subreddit

Also came across this
https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/systemd/
While browsing

I wonder if a competing init system will pop up, I doubt it, but I can hope.

Hmmm if systemd gets worse, I guess sixos is an option. I’ll have to give the talk a listen

It’s a bit wild one former Red Hat then former Microsoft employee gets to unilaterally decide such things.

Systemd has a lot of good stuff in it. But at the same time it felt like it was thrust upon the greater community without much consideration for how users felt. Age verification in FLOSS deserves a ā€œdebateā€, though we all know it won’t be much of a debate - we don’t want it.

True and systemd is a tool, not a age / sex / location machine for hookups. it a tool… like redhat / fedora made wayland, pipewire etc and did it well everyone uses it like systemd is a tool not a Lundukes white whale too kill.

I could code lunduke and jews code into systemd are winners or losers. As its a tool.

Again he is hating on the tool and not the idea.

Openrc exists, runit and more

Just like anything else. Devs and maintainers make the choice, users are free to use alpine, devuan, void linux or any other distro not using systemd

Lunduke is gonna lunduke. He is beating the drama drum on systemd, rust, wayland and something else.

i have no idea how this age verification could be established. it’s absurd that operating-systems should be reliable and do the job for companies like meta, x, tiktok and so forth. this age-verification is the next step that ends up in data-breaching, data-theft and will end in much more trouble than it solves. this discussion about age-verification is much more worse as i thought. the european-parliament is already discussing a ā€˜digital-passport’ to every european and angers me a lot. this politicians are more toxic as the whole chinese-surveilance-system. i’ve seen this in the past. they start arguing they must protect childs from abuse … but the real intention is to sacrifice their evil greed of surveilance and control. the depressing thruth is that they were always succesful eventually and that’s the bad reality.

The ā€œconspiracy theoristsā€ say this is just the first step of the slippery slope. In thw future this system will evolve to use our digital government ID to access the store or even the internet/websites.

It is quite plausible this is just a first step that will be deemed ineffective (because it is), forcing them to double down.

Omg not the init system wars again

Hot take though, most people here would not be using linux at all if they had to hand write init scripts like the old days.

From a technical perspective, if you’re going to allow the operating system to emit a signal that determines access control, it only makes sense to make that pid 1.

systemd hasn’t been Lennart’s project for a long time, same goes for Torvalds and the kernel.

It’s full corporate owned, and they have to comply to laws.

he may not set the direction nor be the only one contributing, but still seems a major contributor…

I don;t know how the project is organised, or managed, but looking at his contributions, he’s still heavily into it…

I know Poettering, left redhat a while ago, for Microsoft, but seems the governance, still has his pretty high up (or, low level) in the systemd project.

I am not against them complying with the legal framework, and enabling other projects to avoid enforcement action, it is the bad laws I am against.

Projects, might choose not to impliment changes that systemd introduce with user age (and presumably, creepier details later) logged in the system, but also, provides a potentially simple way to comply.

Could you root sudo systemctl stop age and tear it up as a kid ?

Probably age ends up in systemctl itself.

Then tool is shifted to a tool and not a hacked tool. Who runs hacked systemd ?

Distros that don’t want it, would surely choose a fork, that diverges by not having the DOB field in the userfile?

and later, when governments get creepier, whatever new horror they inflict on people

We run open source not goverment forced ? correct…

The taxes we pay our governments, should be to benefit society as a whole. this may be at the expense of the individual. Most don’t care, but the few of us that do, work around things where they can be worked around.

Just because I don’t blame distros from remaining operational, does not mean to imply that I will be using the services they may (or may not) be forced to enact.

On the whole, my asshole, weak, loathesome government, generally does not do terrible things to most of it’s peoples, and does a reasonably good job in general in keeping them safe.

This new tactic coming from America, of OS level age reporting (and I suspect, later, verification) added to my own governments suuuper creepy spying of individual activity, are less bad than the kidnapping, sterilisation and murder conducted by some eastern countries, but is less pleasant than I would like.

Again, I say the problem is not the distros, in this particular case.
