System76 Responds to Laws Requiring Age Verification at the OS Level

Yup but that’s a HUGE “for now”. Unless of course you trust Zuk and Trump and the rest. I’d say it’s not worth the risk given the last 12 months of data from our current aspiring despot and crew.

There are also other territories, that may up the anti…

“USA gets away with age? Well, we’ll go for name AND age…”

“They got name and age? We will add SSN!”

“They did SSN? We will arms race it further!”…

I think it is a slippery slope.

I still would rather trust a Linux distro team, to vet potential 3rd parties more than [every Random website choosing different 3rd parties]

That competition will most likely happen sadly. Best way to stop it is to not start this charade of surveillance wrapped up in “protecting the children” in the first place. This is a slope that can and should be avoided.

The laws are voted in already, are they not?

When they come here, we will petition Parliament again, and they will reject it with prejudice, as they did with the ID for Websites thing before

In a few states yes. Federally no, so there is still time to avoid this.

edited to add: and in those states they have zero idea how to actually deploy or enforce this, but I’m sure they’ll get help before the Jan 2027 “start date”.

The thing is that people are deciding to knowingly trust the wrong people on the issue of protecting children. That’s the baffling part. The porn industry itself is backed by large human trafficking operations that occur around the world backed by finance capital and you know that many governments are involved in this. Any sane government would shut these down from their country but no, gotta have that “free market” goodness (and it’s not even “free market” anyways).

“Yes, nothing new there, but nobody can quite explain how or why. I remain unconvinced,”

Knowing that a good chunk of our government are criminals and degenerates that are in our government pulling strings is not compelling enough? That they are blackmailed to serve other criminals ain’t compelling enough?

“Addressing a problem requires its identification, but the detractors of such bills have not successfully formulated a compelling statement of the problem (i.e., a reasonable argument against the bill).”

Being against a totalitarian state that is runned by said criminals and degenerates is not compelling!? That’s all the argument I would ever need to be against this bill. And besides, it is always going to lead back to people taking responsibility regardless.

“Personally I think banning children from brain rotting social media is a great move.”

Fair enough, Social Media is cancerous. But by that logic then you gotta ban TV media from Boomers/Gen-X by that point since that has long rotted a lot of those people’s brains away too.

The United States of America is a totalitarian state? I wouldn’t know, I don’t live there. Unless things have changed recently, I think it is not comparable to Russia, China, North Korea… your classic examples of totalitarian states.

Another Soviet turn of phrase was something along the lines of “three in the marital bed: husband, wife, and Stalin”. I think it’s an apt depiction of totalitarianism.
