Since Supermicro no longer sell motherboards on their store and I can’t find a reseller with this model in store, my question is where do you all buy this motherboard?
If I can’t get hold of the H14SSL-NT is the ASRock TURIND8-2L2T a good option? One downside is the CEB form factor of the ASRock motherboard as it’s hard enough to get a decent 4U rack case for my new NAS/VM server.
Any other recommended AMD EPYC 9005 (the 9115 model) motherboards for server use?
With regards to PCIe slots I need at least one x16 and one x8 (both physical and electrical). In the first one I’ll use something like the Sonnet M.2 8x4 card and in the x8 slot I plan to use a ConnectX card.
Thank you so much for this info!
I was just going to place an order on a hidden ebay seller I found (not listed for me, just showd up on google search) for twice the price!
I hope shipping costs isn´t too bad (Norway, Europe).
A bit long to wait, but that´s okey since I at least can get hold of one at a somewhat decent price.
Race against the clock to get enough memory next. Wendell mentioned sk hynix, but the part number he had in his video is not easy to find. I´m usually better at googling than this.
Again, thanks for this link.
EDIT:
I hope these modules are compatible as I just bought 4 of them. It´s a start.
SK Hynix HMCG88AHBRA 32GB DDR5 6400 RDIMM PC5-51200R Dual Rank x8.
I didn’t find a list, on the motherboards page it was only listed 1 generic item. So I went with the one Wendell posted in his video (his was the 64GB version) and hoped for the best.
Yeah I’ve seen this mentioned. But some say 1 module per CCD and some say one per core. Others say all 12 or nothing for best performance. 20% loss if not? I’ll see. Prices is a bit high and it might take years to come down again. The CPU is the 9115.
That’s the one I found. But I can’t say based on that part number and description alone that the ones I got will work.
I might overthink this, but it seems to be picky with what memory sticks it likes. Given some have problem even to get the board to post. It’s as close to the one Wendell showed, just 2rx8 instead of 2rx4. I’ll guess I’ll find out when the board arrives (waiting for some confirmation on my address before wiredzone can process my order).
This might be better to post a new thread in the cases/chassis subcategory. My next item on the list is a 2U or 4U NAS case and cpu cooler for this build (the 9115 cpu). Not sure if I’ll be able to cool it in a 2U. But only need 12x 3.5" so 4U is a bit excessive. Currently considering the 2U Supermicro CSE-826BE1C-R920LPB or the 4U Supermicro CSE-846BA-R920B. I see two problems with the 2U one, cooling and I have 3 FHFL pcie card I would like to use. Very open for suggestions. I was considering the 45homelab HL15 2.0 but I don’t think the HDD slots will be tight enough so that my drives (Seagate exos x18 and Toshiba mg10) won’t vibrate to death.
First server build in 10 years, my current server is the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9.
Don’t want to break any forum rules, so will take this discussion to another thread that’s more appropriate if derailing this thread is not okay.
Again, thanks for the very helpful link to wiredzone!
Like I said, it becomes a bit of a rabbit hole with Supermicro. You have to look at the Supermicro part number for the RAM, which for a 32GB stick is MEM-DR532MD-ER64. This part number is reference for Samsung, Hynix, and Micron Registered ECC memory.
My understanding of the supermicro part number is:
MEM = memory
DR5 = DDR5
32 = 32GB
MD = ?
ER64 = ECC Registered 6400
That’s very broad and not very specific if it’s picky about other aspects of the modules. And seeing others having issues I was just wondering if I’ve missed something or if those with trouble are using very different memory modules than they should.
So yes it does makes sense. Just not granular enough to rule out random problems some have and I worry about (overthinking I should say).
Yeah, I figured out the Hynix ones and Wendell said they had the edge IIRC even if he used Samsung.
Thanks for the Micron and Samsung parts!
To sum up. As long as it’s DDR5 6400 ECC RDIMM from one of Hynix, Micron, Samsung, what else could the board be picky about? Ranks, like 2rx4 vs 2rx8 or even single rank the manual says it’s supported? Other timings? Revisions of the memory modules? I don’t understand why some have memory problems I guess as long as they use valid modules.
Anyway, I’ve got the modules now and they are as close to what Supermicro states should work. So I’ll just have to wait until February I guess until the motherboard arrives to test this my self.
@Ahsoka, Collecting that much VAT and $100 US dollars for shipping sounds reasonable. Thanks to the current US president, the cost of ordering items outside the United States is very high.
I don’t think I’ve mentioned it in this thread but I’m not located in the US.
Mullet is located in .se and I’m located in .no (and not that far from Mullet, but not driving distance). So shipping shouldn’t be that high, in my opinion. Normal shipping costs for computer parts of that size is 20USD and I would gladly paid up to 50 but 100 was bit high.
Also, dual VAT is often the case for companies that not regularly ship abroad. The webshop software should take care of it. And since I’ve not heard back from them I can’t get it manually sorted out. What should happen is that the .se VAT should be deducted since they’re exporting the item. And at my end I should pay my local VAT on the item including the shipping cost.
It amounts to several hundred USD so I think it matters. But I might just end up biting the bullet as it seems to be extra hard to get my hands on that motherboard.
It might just be my fault too, there seems to be a manual processing so they might be able to fix it later in the process. I’ve not yet given up hope.
My location in the profile is now set but not shown as far as I can tell making it difficult to keep track of users on a global forum like this. Not that everyone would want that either.
I’ll put my location in a post if I think it matters to the topic. But since I was in the market for this motherboard sourced from wherever I didn’t bother to post my location. I can see how that’s not usefull when I later complained about shipping cost without giving relevant details. Sorry about that.
It was ment more as a update on the two recommendations I got (no feedback and a bit pricy). I’m still hoping for one of them to come back to me. I guess it might be easier getting a reply in January rather than the rush this time of year.
I’m building a new Workstation for home around the Epyc 9455p, HighPoint RAID Rocket 7624A and NVIDIA 5080. I’ve had an order in with WiredZone since October 24 for the Supermicro H14SSL-NT-O. It had an ETA of December 25 as a drop ship from Supermicro.
I’ve been watching a couple of other sites as well as e-bay every day since then, and saw this forum post when it came up. This has been a tough one to get.
Supermicro must have released some units, because in the last couple days, there’s a couple of places with inventory now:
An E-bay seller ($1399 USD, 4 available as of now)
Amazon US (Daytona Web, $1299 USD, 5 available as of now)
Neobits ($838.28 USD, “Low stock”)
Tech-America ($767 USD, 3 in stock in CA)
I got an e-mail a few days ago from WiredZone that the shipment date from was unclear now. I’m in the US.
I put an order in with Tech-America for it on Thursday. They wanted me to call them to verify the address, which was fine. The shipping price also changed from $9 (estimate) to $28. But it looks like it shipped yesterday from a warehouse in California!
A few hours after I ordered it from Tech-America, I got an e-mail from WiredZone asking if I agree to still wait in case it comes in. I said yes. I’m thinking of not canceling the WiredZone order, since these are so hard to get. If inventory runs out again, or someone wants this overseas, let me know, and I’ll sell you my “extra” one from WiredZone once I get it.
Hey Daniel, what’s your eta for delivery from Tech-America? I got the email from wiredzone as well but they just clarified that they don’t have inventory right now but if they get it in the future before the actual eta they need my permission to ship it… Not sure what’s going on but I think I might switch my order to tech-america
