Suggestions for Non-Lead Acid Replacement for APC SMT1500C UPS? (Preferably Rackmount)

Hello,

I need to replace my APC SMT1500C UPS. It’s out of warranty and the batteries’ replacement alarm is going off, and I’d rather not just buy more lead-acid batteries to keep it going. It’s in my bedroom office where I sleep, and having a bunch of lead-acid batteries in the same room with me has never been awesome. But apparently it’s even more of a risk than I assumed.

I estimate my idle power usage somewhere around 650w-750w, so 1000w is about the minimum I’d want to ensure some overhead.

This is what I have now:

  • 1440VA/1000W line interactive pure sine wave tower UPS
  • Automatic Voltage Regulation helps correct utility voltage 8x NEMA-15 outlets for output, 120v NEMA-15 input

I sleep and work in here pretty much 24/7, so low noise/silence when it’s not on battery is key. I expect it to scream at me when it’s on actual battery power, both with fans and alarm. That’s fine.

I have a 9U rack, so I was looking at 2U units. A floor unit like I have now would be fine as well, if that’s my only option. My budget is ~$500. (The 2U units I was looking at are reburb’d from a UPS dealer.)

I’d really appreciate any advice. Lithium Ion batteries weren’t even an option the last time I shopped for these. Thanks!

What risk? UPS batteries are of the sealed absorbed glass mat type. They don’t outgas or leak like flooded cells in a car battery.

You already have a UPS it just needs new batteries. So i would just go with the cheaper option of using lead-acid batteries. Even if you replace the batteries every 3 years. It will still be cheaper than buying a LiFePO4 UPS. There just isn’t a big enough market yet for LiFePO4 UPS’s.

However GoldenMate LiFePO4 UPS’s are pretty good. If you must have a LiFePO4 UPS.

@GTwannabe ,

See: APC SMX1500RM2UNC Noise Level Suitable for Bedroom Office?

A couple of very concerned people over there seem convinced I am risking my health by sleeping in the same room with a UPS using SLA batteries.

Given that the other position is sealed, not dangerous unless they catch on fire, I’m pretty confused right now.

I mean, a lithium fire isn’t awesome, either.

@ozlay I have, somehow, 3 UPSes in this room. I want to decommission at least one of them. My current plan is to get a brand new one for the rack to replace the large APC I currently have, and offline one of the floor models.

I may be able to have the new UPS do the work of the third UPS as well, and if that’s the case, I can offline that, too, which would get me down to one. Otherwise, I’ll replace the batteries in that one and be down to two.
