Adubs. It is like a 5% tax on the system. It is nothing. I rock a 4k display with no issues, even while it is Plexing a video up.
SudoWolf:. look at this https://01.org/igvt-g They have been working on it for a while but it just got officially added to the Linux Kernel last month in 4.10. I’d guess we will start to see it being useful in the next year. The you can flick from VM to VM. I’d guess it will be awhile before we see real video cards doing it but it will come.
I already know its negligible, that doesnt mean I want it. Perhaps “shitting” was the wrong adjective to use in this case but my point still stands.
I mean your whole argument that this is the future is silly though. People like us here make up such a marginally small amount of gamers on PC. You’re implying that in the near future that this will be how everyone runs their setup and that simply isnt the case. Is virtualization the future for computing? Sure. One would argue that “future” is already here.
The fact that the time has come that you can even pull someting off like this is neat as fuck. The problem is valve dont give a shit about our 1% use case scenario here. Your average user can barely manage to install their own operating system and even among system builders you’re still talking about a small group of enthusiasts who buy hardware capable of virtualizing an OS for running projects/plex and also simultaneously gaming. Then on top of that its an even smaller group who actually do want to virtualize with that machine.
My hope for the future is that we dont need to virtualize to get the shit we want to do, done. That one day a *nix will come along that can do it all in one package.
This is a real shame. I have an unraid server running various dockers and VMs, including a Windows VM that has GPU passthrough and I use it with Steam in home streaming to various steam link boxes I have attached to TV’s throughout my home for my kids to play games on. Gaming does not happen locally on this system. It doesn’t even have a monitor connected to the GPU.
I would not have purchased the steam link boxes and controllers without this perfect use case scenario for me.
I hope that Valve can find a solution to this issue as otherwise they are hampering their own product ecosystem.
So, basically is it possible to visualize csgo anymore via Linux or by any other software . I was using sadboxie but now it has been detected by the VAC system
Realistically are they though? Think about how many people are using a virtual machine and steam links to play Valve games, or games in general? Linux is either native, or compatibility layer such as WINE, and even then that’s a very small portion of all users.
I’m quite certain I’m in the minority and doing what i’ve done will probably never be mainstream. That said, everyone complaining about windows spying but that switching to linux will be too hard because they would loose all their windows games have no excuse. GPU pass through allows you to keep windows contained to a VM where it belongs.
Seeing as SteamOS doesn’t look like its going to overtake Windows anytime soon for game compatibility they are limiting the potential of their ecosystem by not allowing VMs.
