[SOLVED] HDD testing software suggestions, one used already (as of July 20220

Hi All!

I’ve been using HDDScan on Windows for ages now, I usually go:

SMART
SHORT
Extended
Conveyance
Butterfly (Read data to host with seeks)

Just wonder if there’s a better one, or if this is good enough? My only complaint is when it does some of the tests, there’s no display, it just finishes by saying “This test either ran without error or didn’t run at all”…weird.

I would use one of my TrueNAS machines, but I don’t have a spare SATA port unless I jankily hang a drive out of the case and throw a spare HBA in.

Thanks!

smartctl

package is called smartmontools in most package managers. One of the first things I always install on my machines.

Really covers most bases and supports all SMART tests.

You can also put the command into cron and let it run automatically every other day. That’s how I do it (lazy).

Thank you for that :+1: I’m familiar with smartctl on TrueNAS, never knew there was a linux/win version. Downloaded and play is going to happen shortly.

Thank you again :+1:

I’m using hard disk sentinel right now to burn-in/test some SAS drives. I think they want money for a fully featured license of the software so that is a knock against it. It does have a linux version w/gui that is free though.
