[ Solved] Credit to Mark1 - Ubuntu security update error Mixed sources.list

Hey Chat,

Running into an issue that I can’t perform security updates due to an error. Background, upgraded to 23.04, initial install was 22.04.

When trying to update I get the below error. I can’t seem to shake Kinetic off me.

I’ve tried, maybe stupidly to delete Kinetic references from sources list and comparable files. No luck. It will keep reappearing. Here is the cat of /etc/apt for kinetic

dude@dude-Z590-AORUS-MASTER:/etc/apt$ sudo grep -r kinetic

Can anyone shine some light on this?

WWED

Hello WWED,

I’m guessing that there was an error, when updating the sources. If it where my machine, I would backup all existing important files and try to replace the reference to kinetic with lunar, then reboot.

You can query the in-use repositories like this:

apt-cache policy

Is it because I have non-ubuntu software that is dependent on prior versions?

So it can find the *InRelease packages, but not the *Release ones.
Can you edit the sources files, and like comment out just the kinetic Release ones?

Does look like an unsuccessful incomplete upgrade from 2204, but I haven’t needed to fix such an issue

@Trooper_ish @wwed26 said he used Ubuntu 22.04 to install Ubuntu and upgraded to 23.04. @wwed26 If this was my system, I would either follow @Mark1 or @Trooper_ish advice after I backed up both my personal files and Ubuntu’s operating files. You could completly wipe the drive and reinstall Ubuntu 22.04, but that would overwrite any files added to the computer after the first install.

@Shadowbane Indeed, a reinstallation of an LTS release is a good idea, it is compatible to most software.

@wwed26 There’s a change that more than the sources are corrupt and that you may “brick” your system while trying to repair it.

I personally would try what you suggested first, then @Trooper_ish and if ever thing else failed try my suggestion. Other than @wwed26 losing all his files after the first install, what other disavantages could he face with my idea.

I would comment out the no-longer-existing sources in the “/etc/apt/sources.list” file, and see if the update goes through fine.

Then probably just leave it, and if an update/upgrade later says “sources.list was modified, would you like to keep existing or replace with maintainers version” then… Um… Not sure, because you have external sources… So jump off that bridge later?

I keep /home separate, so I can blow away the O/S, but much rather edit the sources first…

By that, I mean to say, the error message is seems misleading… It is complaining about an insecure source, when really, it cannot find a secure version because the archive may be old and depricated/renamed/removed.

The update successfully finds and pulls from the inrelease version of kinetic and the release version of Luna, so it is finding packages, just not the deprecated sources.

Also, I would not worry but would try and suppress the error, and also expect it to sort itself out later…

It’s strange, I’ve done this a number of times and unless I am drunk it keeps becoming un-commented.

The only thing I am truly worried about is the “Basic Security Maintenance Ended 7/30/2023” in the first post.

I backup my files to a different drive on a weekly basis and can throw something on a 3rd party drive for the really important.

Not adverse just blowing the OS away if I absolutely have to. The only thing i’d have to do is try to figure out how to move a VM. I always have permission issues with those.

Could you double check the version that Ubuntu reports? The below terminal command(s) will print your current OS release and kernel version.

What you can try, is to run the do-release-upgrade process/steps manually.
