I got a new high paying job and im looking for a CPU with awesome single thread performance. i was taking a look at the Intel Core i7-5820K. its im my range of 300-400 bucks i just need some tips or maybe a better CPU Performance. im looking for CPU's with atleast 6 cores and are great at single thread. and my price range is about 500 bucks total for mobo and cpu
Well, the 5820k and 5930k are intel's only CPUs that have 6 cores right now but the 5930k is just under 600 bucks. only, none of the X99 mobos on new egg will fit your $500 combined price range. also don't forget you will need to buy DDR4 ram to go with the 5820k too.
5820k + that x99 MSI SLI mobo used in pistols rig is about ~500usd. Although ram is going to mean more money ontop of that. Might be some non OCable intel processor for a bit less, idk.
Well Intel is the way you will want to go for sure if you want all that single thread performance.
Can I ask other than games what it is you will be doing with the PC. Six cores for just games especially in Intel.land is crazy overkill. But if you are going other things like heavy rendering or production work the sxi cores would be good.
If you are only gaming I would easily recommend the i5 4690K or the i7 4790k. Both a lot cheaper and will be more than enough for games and the i7 4790k will be good for a lot more with the hyperthreading.
Team these up with a good motherboard like an MSi Z97 Gaming 5 and you will be flying. And you won't have to spend huge amounts on DDR4 RAM.
Zibob don't say that >.<. I am looking at those 6 cores myself, the extra PCIE lanes are very nice, especially with these crazy M.2 Ultra SSDs coming out. And who doesn't need 3 GFX Cards? Especially if you can do that voodoo magic and pair GFX cards of different architectures with DX12...
Actually skylake/cannonlake are both quad cores right, and even if skylake comes out in about 1/2 year, and cannonlake and it's successor one year out, your still looking at 2.5-3 years before a >4 core on intel side with small IPC gain each year.. In which case the DDR4 premium might not be that bad too pay to get that performance and the feature set right now!! Particularly if you were already looking at the more expensive Z97 boards.
Then grab more DDR4 when prices drop.
EDIT Although SKYLAKE rumoured 15% IPC gain, and has extra 4 PCIE 3.0 Lanes (on chipset though??) for M.2. SATA Ultra. Which is PCIE3.0 4x lane, and can run those crazy NVME 2.0GBps SSDs, so that is an option if it is not just a rumour, and comes out before we DIE OF OLD AGE EDIT
Well I have a Four core AMD Athlon II x4 860K it really good. It's actually one of AMD's best single thread CPUs. It has 1580 points on single thread. But since its 4 core . When I try to play a CPU intesive game and then use like FB or Youtube. Those Programs slow down and the game stays the same. So I think 6 core is good for me. 4 cores for gaming 2 cores for everything else lol but DDR4 is pretty expensive. But I just want 8 GBs those memory clocks are way awesome though.
Also I have two R9 270Xs though. So ill carry them over from my AMD PC
Also it has hyperthreading so its (almost) like 12 cores.
I really don't think you need that much at all but it is your money. It will seriously fly through anything you can throw at it.
You might want to wait until Skylake. Also, you should cnosider what you actually need and will be using it for and then look up benchmarks for that. If you edit videos 1% of the time that you are using your rig, then should you really consider editing all that much when building it? Focus on what you will be actually using it for.

zibob is probably right here, especially if you are running 270Xs. Would wait for the Skylake? Get those extra 4pcie lanes for m.2. ultra and rumoured 15% increase in IPC.
I'm looking to upgrade my own rig but I can wait for skylake. Not to mention ddr4 ram prices will fall since there will be a mainstream platform to support it. The 5 series 6+ cores are cool though.
Go Intel, AM3+ is a dead socket.
So how about the 3930K? It's a 6 core. 1917 single thread. Hyperthreading DDR3 and I got a deal for 470 bucks with an EVGA mobo.

....... is that a Hyper 212 on an AC1900?
No, that's a Hyper 212 on top of a WRT54GL. Gotta get those extra Mhz. I didn't make the image, but I do own a WRT54GL and a Hyper 212 Evo. Guess it wouldn't be hard to shoot it myself...
Edit:
Now that I've looked closely, the heat pipes are arranged differently. No clue what kind of heat sink that is.
i was comparing single thread from the i7 5920 and the i7 4790K and i saw the single thread preform and i was like "srew 6 cores this has 2500 single thread!!!!!" lol and its ddr3
I believe it is a prolimatech cooler of some description, they stack their cooling pipes behind each other to help airflow. Not sure what is better....
