Smart TVs: Ethernet-over-HMDI - is this a thing or even possible?

Following from the the video L1T did with GN about LG TVs, I have a a simple question about LG TV’s and prolly smart TV’s in general.

When Steve spoke about using a TV as a dumb monitor, and had it connected to a laptop via HDMI, my first thought was did Steve mean the TV would be connect to the internet over HDMI?

As I learned a few days ago, Ethernet-over-HMDI is a thing. But I can’t see how the TV would be able to use this protocol, if a laptop and or a graphics card doesn’t - a) support it and b) its not physically wired/connected to enable this.

kind regards

It is a thing but I don’t think it has ever been implemented.

Laptop hdmi ports dont support this, maybe there is some exception but to support this mode they need to have additional hardware. And if i remember correctly this feature was added way too late when wifi was already commonplace and cheaper to have on TVs, so its not that common there either
