Single GPU Passthrough: A guide with a series of scripts

Available here.

I found this last week and have been hacking at it to try to get it to work. Took me the whole weekend but now I’m able to boot into Windows 10 1709 x64 without any issues. Tested some games and they work as expected!

The pros of this method are obvious: you don’t have to cough up a second beefy GPU, a separate storage device for dual booting or have to try to hack at partitioning for single drive dual booting.

The cons would be that currently, you have to kill your WM/DM etc – you’re going to have to kill X11 to be able to detach the GPU. This means that all the applications running within the X11 graphical interface are going to be killed with it.

Hopefully this inspires somebody to try this out! If you do, let the maintainer know by submitting a PR with a writeup of your setup and how you did it.

You can find my writeup here. It should help save time troubleshooting if you’re having issues getting drives to work, passing through audio, or having really slow drive speeds.

Have fun!
