Seeking a motherboard - M-ATX to support a dual PCI 4.0 x 16 GPU. I can find the motherboard of that size, some with two PCI slots, but in my discovery, I see a full 4.0 x 16 lane, and the second PCI lane is 4.0X4. I can technically place a full GPU in the second slot, but the second slot will only get 4.0 x 4 service.
I would like for this motherboard to exist in the new AMD5 or Intel upper I9 plus.
That would require 32 PCIe lanes. There are currently no desktop category systems with that many lanes; Intel and AMD have determined that the target market does not require it. To get that kind of I/O bandwidth, you would need to look at the workstation and server categories of systems.
Which video cards you intend to use and what workload requires PCIe4 x16 to saturate their capabilities? There are a few desktop boards that will run dual x8 slots (though would have to check for µATX specifically), which covers most desktop graphics workloads.
If you require 2x16 PCIe lanes your only option is EPYC, Threadripper or Xeon.
That said, 2x8 4.0 is already so fast you will have virtually no bottlenecks to speak of with regard to graphics - and both Zen 4 and Intel 13th gen support PCIe 5.0.
I am ok with PCIe 4.0, I would prefer x16 on each lane. So that when I purchased another GPU or etc. I do not want to have to do a lot of moving around of items. I want to use dual PNY A cards. In doing so I want each card to stand on its very own.
For older platforms [PCIe 3.0], you’d have likes of x299 and x399
Only one (1) mfr, for each of these platforms, made such a package
EVGA x299 Micro [Gen 7-10 LGA 2066]
ASRock Taichi x399-m [Gen 1/2 Threadripper]
*Either option requires, that the peripherals being 2 slot tall max
I thought the AMD4 or 5 was at a point of handling a dual GPU setup for PCIe 4X16. I currently have a Threadripper Pro, and love it. BUT I do the aspect of reducing the size of the PC. BUT finding a smaller format motherboard to hold to 4x16 PCi slots. Is extrealy hard. Makes no sense to me, but it is what it is. If I had to get a larger size motherboard - I will keep the setup I have.
I wish the manufacturers produced computers to support the threadripper pro and come in a smaller format. Sure you are going to lose something, but nothing wrong with having some nice power in a smaller format.
Maybe over the next year, something might change - maybe, maybe not.
Right now, I am going to keep pushing to work on my project of placing my threadripper in a smaller case and footprint. Right now, I have a jonsuplus i400 case, and everything fits, but I would like to get a couple of items customized so I can have max cooling in the smaller format.
I would say something like the ASRock ROMED6U-2L2T is what you are looking for. Only found this with a quick google search though, I have no idea how good it is as of today. It supports EPYC 7002 / 7003 systems.
This would (atleast in theory) allow you to put in 4x watercooled PCIe x16 GPUs.
I wish the AMD Epyc and ThreadRipper Pro had the same socket. I will have to keep dreaming on that one. I currently have the AMD 3975WX. I have no issues with it.
I am looking around and ASROCK has a B650M PG Riptide WiFi motherboard to support a dual GPU.
Am I reading the information correctly? Link and Specs below. Can I use this motherboard to run two A6000 GPU in syc, and each GPU at full load? I cant tell if both of the PCIs are supported by the CPU or chip?
Technically I would like to make an amazing compact workstation for CAD. I do want the support of ECC RAM and is there a step-up in motherboard? Is there a 670??? The hunt is on.
No, that one has x16, x1, x1, x4. It can fit two GPUs but one of them will be x16 and one will be x4.
Unfortunately this seems to be the standard setup for most mATX boards.
Another potential problem with that board is that the secondary x16 slot only got room for a single slot card e.g. you need to watercool that card or put it in a full ATX case. If mATX slot 1 and 3 has the x16 slots, that means you can put in two regular two-slot cards.
Thank you so much for the information you provided. If I took the Intel route. I am seeking a dual GPU - 2 x PCIe 4 x 16 - slots that are going at it full-blown. Would this motherboard work out?
Closer but still x16 / x4 gen 4.0. This could be fine depending on your use case though.
The best you could do theoretically is x12 / x12 with both Intel Core and AMD Ryzen. Realistically you will get x8 / x8 at best. Most only offer x16 / x4 though.
As I have shared I am really shocked. That we are not at this point. Smaller format motherboard, with full X16 PCi slots with the AMD 7. Wow. It is cool, it is ok.
I have the 3975wx, and I really like it and have no technical issues. The development of my current system has been as smooth as possible. Right now I will keep working on getting a smaller case.
There will always be an itch to ditch and move - but in being realistic. No real value.
