The title says it all. While buying my current laptop, I decided to save some money by choosing the 512GB storage option as Lenovo selected to upcharge ~200€ for an additional 512GB. So now, space on my drive is becoming exclusive real estate. However, to my dismay, I discovered that Lenovo also chose to use the 42mm m.2 2242 form factor for the SSD in my laptop, and it can’t even be double-sided.
Now here comes the tricky part, after some research, I couldn’t track down any SSD which fulfills my requirements.
- 2242 m.2 NVMe SSD, as there are only mounting options for this specific size.
- One-sided without any contacts/components on the underside, as it sits directly on the surface of the mainboard.
- It Is at least 1TB in size.
- (Optional) Is fast specifically for desktop use, aka. low latency, and many IOPS. The laptop supports PCIe 4.0.
In my search, I came across the Sabrent Rocket NVMe 2242 SSD, which would be perfect for my use case if it were not double-sided.
Similarly, I found the parts from Lenovo. However, they are listed as unavailable, and I don’t know if I want to trust some shady Amazon seller. I have attached some images from the Lenovo support page of the SSD and a teardown image courtesy of the German review site notebookcheck. Maybe someone can help me out here and has a recommendation for me. ![]()
