Does not appear to have a vent hole according to their documentation.
Do you know what it is filled with
No I don’t. Not something I looked up.
Hi @Rudy, Welcome to the form. I agree with @thetazman since the documentation he posted says it doesn’t support what you wanted.
What I wanted to know is it a good hard drive to have as an external will it last long because it is not in a surveillance system and I wanted to know if it has a vent hole because I have been pointing a fan at it for most of it’s life and I was scared I was going to blow dust in it if it had a vent hole and I was not willing to open the enclosure to see if it had a vent hole I understand very little of the document because I am not a PC enthusiast I buy what I think is good and this drive was on promotion when I bought it
I understand that hard drives don’t last forever I just wanted to know if anybody has experience with this model of hard drive
There are so many different drive models out there that unless your a data center the chances of one of us having any experience with that specific drive is going to be less than .0000001%.
Usually if a drive has an air hole it’s going to have a filter under it to protect it from dust and debre. The drive manufactures expect them to be used in systems with air flowing around them to aid in cooling.
Is the external hard drive just going to be used as a data backup drive? Or do you plan on using it 24/7? Or both?
As a strictly data backup drive any of the standard seagate / western digital drives will do the job. Plug it in copy the data over and then disconnect the drive and keep it in cold storage. Less up time and less hours used should keep the drive running a lot longer than the rated mtbf (mean time between failure) and the 3 - 5 year warranty.
If your planning on using it 24 / 7 step up to a wd pro or seagate iron wolf drive. they are built a bit beefier and will handle the 24/7 life better.
For both operations get 2 of the pro / iron wolf drives and run 1 of them as a 24 / 7 drive and the other as an offline cold data storage.
My $0.02 worth.
It is a general purpose hard drive I use it when I need it and don’t use it when I don’t need it but I understand less use means it will last longer
