I have 2 Seagate IronWolf NAS 4 tb that read as 1.6 tb as the total size. ST 4000VN006 model number for one of the drives. I bought 4 about a year ago, 1 has worked with no issues.
Any ides why?

What are the drives connected to? The only time I’ve seen this is when the drives are attached to a HBA of some kind that can’t see drives >2TB.
Right now I have one connect by USB to a dock and a working one connected via SATA. I’ve used this model before with USB and had no issues.
Welp, there’s your problem. Your USB HDD dock is limited to addressing 2TB. This is a known issue for many docks. Might be time to upgrade your USB HDD dock.
Hmmm, The one i’m using is rather dated. I have never heard of a 2 TB limitation for docks, but I’ve also never done any research on the subject or ran into the problem in the field.
Thanks TONS. I have an eSATA connection or maybe just plug it in directly to the SATA ports for the server I’m working on.
Just some context, I’m upgrading a 2TB on my plex server to a 4TB.
Again, Thanks for the input and your time
Yea it’s a thing. The chipset in the dock that interfaces with the drives is no different that the ones found on motherboards / hba / raid cards. So it stands to reason that olded docks addressable drive size is out paced by the capacity of the drives today.
I’d suggest just getting an updated drive dock … from the sounds of it, it’ll be usefull to you further down the road fro troubleshooting / data recovery and or data transfer!
My $0.02 fwiw!
You might also find those old controllers repurposed into new off-brand products sold on Amazon, Ali and the like.
It’s not uncommon in my experience to find usb 2.0 where 3.0 has been advertised, etc.
You can sometimes see people sharing information like this in reviews.
And that’s why you buy reputable brands from reputable vendors!
