Sc-fi novel cover art?

I am writing a sci-fi novel and will eventually need some cover-art, but i have no idea how much that would cost?
I think i remember Krista mentioning doing art on comission? But im not sure if that wasnt related to a joke from Ryan about people requesting furry art?
Anyway, that was so long ago i dont even remember the context.

I can not help with that as I have no talent in the arts, but on the L1Techs homepage there is a contact form you might use to get in contact with the team. Also it might be worth a shot to see if AI can help you generate something, this might be a low cost solution that would be cheaper then an Artist.

As well as alienating to a fair chunk of potential readers, beyond the opposition to commercial use of AI image itself; If the cover art is AI generated, then what else might also be?

Might be true on the other the cat is out of the bag. Many of the big authors will probably use AI to help them write their stories as well, even only if used for inspiration.

There could also be copyright issues with using AI images for a commercial product.

There are subreddits that you could use like r/HungryArtists or something. Other sites like Fiverr and Upwork could be a good place to find someone. Look up some local tattoo artists, most of them dabble in other mediums besides flesh.

Anecdotal data but every si-fi author I’m aware of that’s addressed the topic is a hard no. To paraphrase a few examples: no way, not ever, I write because I like writing (Scalzi), f*ck the plagiarism machine (Leckie), and AI will never live up to its lies (Jemisin). Most are, unsurprisingly, quite pointed about having their books stolen.

There’s enough authors I’m sure there’ll be at least one well known writer who takes a public anti-AI posture and eventually gets caught using it anyway. We’ll call it gAImanning or something.

I use AI regularly, I like it, I think it’s fine for a lot of use cases.

EVEN THEN, If I see a book with AI on the cover I would not even look at it for 5 seconds, let alone consider the thought of buying it, or even reading it for free. That’s from someone who thinks AI is fine!!

At the bottom end I think you can get away with spending $50-100 for a piece + a few hours looking for the right starving artist. For $500+ you start having a ton of options of highly competent pro artists.

With such a turn of phrase Sir, Perhaps You should also consider becoming an author…

I have been writing a fantasy novel for a couple of years. I think I have 3 pages so far. lol

Kudos to OP for being at the publishing/artwork stage

Normally I would be inclined to endorse AI co-writers just because it annoys the insufferable pro-copyright lot, but having read stories co-written by AI, it would be a tad too hypocritical even for me. The quality is just not there and you can tell the stitches between an actual author and the LLM.

AI cover art is fine though. If an artist is good enough to deserve money, they will continue getting jobs. All the AI is doing is cutting out leeches.
