Sata 6gbps pcie controller on a sata 3gbps motherboard

if I install a pcie sata 6g controller card (or sas for that matter) into a pcie 2.0 motherboard with native sata 3gbps support, will I see any increase in performance over the native support? re-purposing old hardware as a file server and just wondering if it’s worth the $25 for the sata 6gb card.

Something you might be able to measure with specific benchmarks, but in general usage, you’ll see no difference.

Only reason to add the card is if you need more ports that what the motherboard offers.

If you are plugging hard drives into it, then almost certainly no.

If you are plugging SSDs into it, the maybe.
