Sapphire R9 380 4GB crashes in Unigine Heaven Scene 26ish

I just got a Sapphire R9 380 4GB and it has a recurring problem. Every time I get to Scene 26 or so in Unigine Heaven it loses signal to my monitor and I have to do a hard reset. I tried purging all graphics drivers in safe mode with DDU and reinstalling but this single scene in Heaven is giving me a hard time...

Unigine Heaven Settings:
DirectX11
1920x1080
Quality: Ultra
Tessellation: Extreme
Anti-aliasing: x8
Fullscreen On

Running this all on Windows 10 Pro.
It isn't heat related - my temperatures stay around 75C on full load.

I ran 3DMark Firestrike (Link to my results: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/11476942) and it completed it with no problems whatsoever. I also ran Furmark with no problems. I ran TOTAL WAR: Shogun 2 DX11 benchmarks with no problems as well.

I'm debating whether or not I should RMA because everything else works fine but this one scene on Heaven. (Its the scene with the windmill).

Help would be much appreciated. I worked my butt off to upgrade to this card!

Hey...
Since everything else works just fine, my guess is, probably the benchmark itself have a bug or something...
Try reinstalling the benchmark. If the problem persists, try downloading the benchmark from another source...
Since everything else works fine, i don't know where other than the benchmark itself, could the issue be. If it is a driver issue, hardware issue, anything else, there will be performance hick ups on other places. Not just one specific scene in one specific benchmark.
It is not the power supply, because this GPU can basically be powered up with 450W PSU without much of an issue...
100% load 75C is kind of OK, so it is not thermal issue also...

Thanks for the reply. I'll try reinstalling Heaven and get back to you. I'm thinking the same thing as you though. I think everything is fine it's just a bug with Unigine.

Have you tried adjusting the graphics setting for Heaven? I'd try turning tessellation down or off to start with.

Regarding an RMA, to me the idea of returning a card because one benchmark crashes in one area is a bit ridiculous. If the card plays the games you want to play, and performance is what you expect, then I'd leave well enough alone and be happy.

I wouldn't worry about it if it's just happening in one benchmark. Hell, GPU passmark says my 980ti is on par with a standard 980, but every other benchmark says otherwise. I just ignored it.

Good news. When I turned Tessellation off it ran perfectly without any problems.

I think you're right though. The card performs great in games and other benchmarks so I don't think I'll be RMAing this! We'll see for sure after 1 week of use.

Thanks!

I'm glad that got it sorted out for you. The majority of AMDs modern GPUs I've used (Pitcairn, Tahiti, Bonaire, Tonga) have issues when using aggressive levels of tessellation. So I'd recommend keeping that setting near the middle of the options, or just off if the program doesn't make much use of it.

Out of curiousity, have you checked the Windows System Log in the Event Viewer?

I have not done that yet. How do I access that?

This is most likely an issue with something related to the OS combined with the specific hardware you're using. I've ran into similar issues, except it was InstallShield not opening on an enterprise deployment, and had to manually fix all the installers.

Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System.

How to get there is a bit different in Windows 10, from Windows 7, so I am not entirely sure how to explain navigating getting there, but I believe it is more or less the same.

Found the Warning:

Log Name: System
Source: Display
Date: 4/1/2016 3:46:20 PM
Event ID: 4101
Task Category: None
Level: Warning
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: Hunden
Description:
Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

It seems to be a driver problem but it doesn't give much detail as to why it wasn't responding.

I think that I recall having a bunch of Event ID 4101 errors, when AMD first started releasing their steady stream of driver updates, and Fallout 4 was crapping out its first couple patches.

Interestingly enough, I only had that issue with that one game, too.

Hmm... interesting. I remember reading about the Fallout 4 issues and it seems to be the same issue I'm having - a driver issue.

A little update: been using the R9 380 very heavily the past few days and it's holding up great! I'm very pleased with the performance of this card and the temperatures (My old 6870 would reach 90C... whew).

Phew! I am having the exact same problem with my R9 380 .. was about to RMA as well. Heaven crashes at the windmill and my monitor looses connection. Anything else works just fine.. Win10 64 - Crimson Edition 16.4.1 Hotfix.

So it's this specific setup that Heaven does not like or a driver related problem. My old R7 260x ran it to the end with no crash. I also did not reinstall my OS... just uninstalled the drivers and replaced gpu's.

I will try to reinstall my Windows and try the benchmark again... hopefully that will fix it.

Good to know that someone else is having the same issue! Hopefully AMD can fix the problem with tessellation soon. Tell me if everything goes smoothly after your reinstall.

Update on OS Reinstall. Tough luck... the problem persists. Same scene. Same time. The Windmill.

I did study this a bit and i think it could be something related to my gpu bios. And i am seriously considering flashing mine. My curent version is F51 from 2015/12/30.

A new bios was released on 2016/01/25 for SKHYNIX memory. Problem is that for SKHYNIX there are three of them F21, F42 and F71. I dont know what to chose, that cause the description aint that accurate. I dont wanna brick my gpu... i have Hynix memory.

Take a look http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5462#bios

[Edit] So far i do not complain. Black Ops 3 runs like a dream 75-90 fps constantly in MP with everything cranked up with the Extra graphics options enabled from the cfg. Shadow Map Quality High. Crysis 3 ran smooth on High Textures/High Details SMAA x2 (on Extra does go around 30-31 fps on some areas and feels a bit laggy, but i guess that's normal) .. The other games i play like Heroes of the Storm, Dota 2 or Diablo 3 run very smooth as well. So i dont know if this flash is really necessary ... But if i can fix a problem.. What do you guys think? Also if i chose to.. witch bios version should i go for.

Is scene 26 the one with the night time stuff when the camera goes across the bridge? You could be right about bios update, only crashed there when my overclocks decided to fail. Could try and increase voltage a tiny bit and see run heaven again.

It's the scene where the camera goes around a windmill... goes for like half of that scene and then boom.. Monitor goes black. Restart and that's that.

About the bios update.. in the description it states that it increases stability. So i guess it addresses the VRM's on the GPU. It's a wild guess.. That cause they have NO real description on those bios updates.. Still i am willing to try... I know i may lose the warranty on my gpu by doing this .. but yeah.

The only problem is that i cannot find anywhere on the World Wide Web... at least some kind of description on these 3 bios versions released on the same day. All of them being for Hynix memory. Darn gigabyte should make more sense about their product updates.. . Kinda eats me inside

[Edit] Yeah you could go for more juice .. please tell your results by doing that

New bios came out today! Did try to update.. but i got the old "Not your ID.. it cannot be done. HahA!" kinda message ... Frustrated. Going to RMA this G1 ... Dunno what i was thinking.. going for Gigabyte.. knowing they are like worst option out there... I always went for Sapphire.. RMA it is for me.
