Safe place to buy cables

For all of Wendell’s cable testing I’m a tad shocked to not see a pinned thread about safe / legit cables and where to procure them. I’m in the market for a 10’ DP cable.

I’d wager too many here can relate too buying cables on scAmazon is about as useful as boiling spaghetti and plugging it in to your GPU/Router/monitor/audio/butthole. The last time I bought cables I bought locally. A week later the place midnight moved and there is nothing local since so I’m stuck buying online and frankly no where feels safe.

When i need cables i usually get them from monoprice.com. I never buy the cheapest, i usually get the mid-ranged prices cables , as they work well as a rule. The cheep cables are just that, the mid-ranged pricing cables seem to be of good quality.

I like Monoprice usually, but I have had some HDMI cables that did not run at spec and caused a problem. Two passive copper cables around the 10’ range, and an active fiber optic HDMI cable that started failing and losing video sync within a year.

Thanks for the suggestion. As for midrange vs cheapish, what do you consider midrange? Looking at prices it’s like from $5 to $100! So are we talking go for the $13 cable or the $50? (I’ll use a carrier pigeon before I pay $50 for a cable haha.)

“Spec” isn’t something I care about. (meaning as long as the spec is the basics) As long as it can pipe audio and draw to screen I’m good. I’m not doing anything fancy like gaming much less high refresh. Just a wall of screens and one screen is just a tad too far away for my 6’ers.

The longevity is how they getcha! heh

I recall LTT doing a video on cable testing in their Lab fairly recent (last 24 months or so), perhaps you can find something on the LTT Labs website on that.

Lol sorry I don’t trust anything that comes from Sir Drops-A-Lot and crew.

What meant was get something that will fit your needs, that isnt cheap price wise. you dont need the $100 US hdmi cable when a $15 (but not a $5) one will do the job

OK that sounds do-able heh. Wait so you mean I shouldn’t buy the dollar store cables. Thanks for the monoprice recommend. I will probably grab one of their tier or two up from the lowest. I saw monoprice (their name/brand) for some high end audio stuff a while ago too. I’d never heard of them or used them so I was kinda skeptical.

Speaking of I know Wendell speaks highly of Club3D stuff but my lord, in my country I might as well be buying a house! It always kills me seeing people be all like “Oh yeah you can pick these up for $50!” Checks my prices…$300??? Australians get screwed even worse heh. Poor upside down bastards!

I won’t vouch for super-high-end cases, but if you need a solid cable without mad markups, I recommend https://grumpymancables.com

This shop is a recent conversion of a local shop to an online storefront, but I’ve been buying PC parts and cables from the proprietor for around 20 years and I’ve never had a dud…and the prices make me giggle.

YMMV, but I’ve always been very happy with the curated cables from solid suppliers.

Well again, nothing high end here with this search. I’ve already got a cable coming but the store name alone wins me over. I see there is audio stuff too so as long as shipping isn’t insane I’ll be checking that place out next time I need something. Thanks for the rec. (…or whatever the kids use to shorten recommendation these days. Shakes fist at cloud that looks like kids…)

but really, any OEM cable is generally fine albeit more expensive

Monoprice is fine for cables, we buy pallets of premade ethernet cable every year. Test each one as there are bad batches from time to time.

Alibaba safer than scAmazon? Part of me say possibly because every cable I’ve got from Amazon from the last few years was non-functional, but it’s Alibaba so skepticism remains high. Kinda feels like you’re in a dark alley, you can buy from Shady Louie or Dingy Lou. Chance of either selling you something real, 0 to 10% heh. Let’s add Homely Carl (AliExpress) to the alley to round things out. heh.

Really bout the same unless it’s sold by the manufacturer.

Fulfilled by Amazon hides alot of shady sellers.

Hence why I was looking for an alternative and why I call it scAmazon. The caveat is scAmazon (the fullfilled by with the return bit) you can typically just get a refund if it’s garbage.

The day that’s no longer the case or just too much of a dark pattern PITA I don’t know what I’ll do…perhaps start dumpster diving behind government buildings hehe. Though the wasteful bastards send everything to the shredder these days. Thousands of brand new unopened cables, hard drives, laptops, desktops, monitors…disgusting and sad…though to bring the joke home if they resold to the public when no longer wanted/needed we’d probably buy to find out it was all stuff from a tender won by alibaba or aliexpress anyhow hah.

/me buys hard drive from Government “Wait, I thought this was listed as a WD but it says Western Dogeital. This isn’t a SeaGate it’s a SeeGate!” (Intense flashbacks to Sorny and Panaphonics!)

Hmm maybe this thread should become a knock off brand name joke thread…
CPU’s by AMdi, InTold (sounds like boy/girl band or 90’s R&B names)
Hard Drives from SeeGayt, Westrn Digimon
Mother boards by aSUS…wait Asus is already sus…OK OK I’ll stop…or WILL I?

I am down with that sentiment, but due to their repeated mentions I did discover infinite cables who I bought long runs of cat6 (or was it 6a?) from. I haven’t tested them beyond just plugging my computer into the router and that works fine, but they came with test sheets that presumably prove they are quality cables if (1) you trust they are real and (2) know how to read such things. seems like a good store to me. I just made sure to NOT click the link in the description. (I don’t know if they are actually a LTT sponsor or their writers just plug them because they like them)
