Router configuration for server to be available to the whole network

Hi! New to the forum and hoped someone can help with current setup I have cooked up.

Planning to build my first media server and encountered a problem regarding the network setup.

Visual overview: ![conundrum|720x436](upload://vD3xgAT5EPe5FYVtQwGWwWybvEz.png)

There are 2 routers, one behind another. Both of them have OpenWRT with default settings(the first one was switched to PPPoE, second one I assume comes with DHCP out of the box? so it’s left at that).
With house built 10 years ago there’s no conduit to run cable from the first router to the media server, so had to make connection from the second router.
There is however a connection from first router to the newly placed RPi4 with Kodi.tv on LibreELEC hooked up to the old TV with the plan to stream media from the server mentioned.

Now the questions are (with what limited knowledge in networks I have):

  • how to make media server visible to the whole network?
  • would setting up the second router as repeater work?
  • what settings should be set on both routers to achieve it?(as I have only recently switched to OpenWRT and not really familiar with all the configuration it can provide)

As I understand the second router should be able to “delegate” everything in terms of routing to the first one but not really sure if it is possible(or what settings relate to that)?

I’m comfortable with terminal, not opposed to read documentation(preferably suited for dumdums) but a guide/steps to follow would probably be the best of help.

OpenWRT can be configured as a “dumb-AP” also known as a layer 2 bridge.

This mode will delegate most routing tasks to an upstream proper router. Essentially turns an openwrt device into a dumb extender for another network. “Dumb Access Point”.

OpenWRT wiki has a good article with walkthroughs to configure dumb-ap mode.

Thank you for the reply!
This was indeed the solution.

Everything worked like magic(not without hiccups, but by the end figured it out).

The guide mentioned that Ethernet cable should be plugged into the LAN port instead of WAN ONLY for the command line route(was doing everything through LuCi, so was stuck at the last step not being able to connect to the router/internet. Read everything once again and replugged the cable to LAN and all was solved.

(since I’m new there seems to be a problem with my screenshot and markdown now that I look at it, so for posterity will attach it below)

i have 3 dumb APs in my house. all are just reconfigured OpenWRT systems. its a very nice trick to keep in one’s repertoire.

i’ve set up dumb APs like that too. the LAN port tip is key. for accessing the main router’s admin panel or changing setting like SSID, i rely on the official site for default credentials and IP info
