Require help interpreting SMART results

I require help interpreting SMART results. I knew in advance the disk was not perfectly fine so I ran an extended selftest. I am unfortunately unable to determine if the disk would still be fine to use for a ZFS pool.

Thank you!

Unless someone see’s something different, the drive appears to be okay for use. Has over a year of use time, which imo is still perfectly fine.

You’ve had some read failures. That doesn’t mean the drive is dead. It does mean you may have lost some data. If the drive is empty you could run the Linux badblocks program on it with a read/write test. After running the test then try the SMART self-test again.

Or just try writing zeros to the whole drive.

The point is that if the read failures are from a weak signal on disk then rewriting it may make those blocks good again. Or if they are physically bad somehow the drive can relocate them to spares.

The drive is in real trouble if it cannot write to those bad read blocks or if read failures increase constantly or if relocated blocks increase constantly. If that happens the drive is probably toast. It could have had a head crash or something which damaged several tracks or the head.

Absolutely. I have drives in use of the same capacity, with power_on time of 60+k hrs, still totally fine.

Thank you for this answer. The reported read failures were what worried me. I will run badblocks and the smart test again and report here how it turned out.

Badblocks reported:

Pass completed, 1122 bad blocks found. (27/0/1095 errors)

SMART failed with:

This looks bad, right?

I believe WD Red drives have a 3 yr warranty. It seems you have this drive for less then 2 years, so request an RMA for the drive.

It is out of warranty for a couple years already. The listed life time seems to be the time it was turned on.
