Remove buzzer from Supermicro PDB-PT213-S8824

I recently bought a super cheap old CSE-219 based server, which I’m now converting for my needs.

Whenever I’m only using one of the two redundant PSUs a buzzer constantly screams at me. I would like to get rid of that buzzer and I’m considering desoldering the annoying thing from the PDB.

Do any of you have experience doing something similar?
Is there any reason why I shouldn’t do this?

Here are a few pictures of the PDB with the buzzer:

So maybe desoldering is the best option as I don’t see any jumper blocks to disable this piezo device.

No, there is no jumper. At least I haven’t found one. That’s why I’m asking about possible pitfalls if I were to desolder the buzzer.

and I take it the BIOS didn’t have a toggle for the buzzer either ?

No, it’s a pretty low tech implementation on the PDB. There also is another buzzer on the motherboard and an optional one on the backplane…
The buzzer on the PDB only provides warnings about PSU failures and as far as I know is not controlled by the motherboard.

I threw some money at this problem:

I should have mentioned why I don’t want to use both PSUs, as the number of plugs isn’t an issue:
I’ve measured a standby power usage of 10-15W for each PSU. I want to avoid this and therefore want to use only one PSU to power the server.

Makes sense. I figured I provide a potential solution from left field.

So I went ahead and desoldered the buzzer. While I haven’t tried every possible permutation, it looks like everything went perfectly.

The buzzer no longer get’s on my nerves while all errors are still properly reported to the BMC. Also the front panel alarm led still works.

Very good
