Hi folks,
I’m currently running a Vostro 5590. A bit more than a year ago I bought a dock for the Vostro, a D6000. This one works great (typically) but has some serious issues in Linux. Specifically performance, the absolute mess that proprietary drivers are and the 1 fps bug when I close the laptop screen are killing me. If I learned one thing it’s that I’ll never ever buy displaylink again. What a shitshow.
Anyways, rant aside, I’d like to have an dock that can run on the Vostro, with power delivery and support for 2x DisplayPort. At home this is a 1x 4k screen, at work this is a 2x 2k screen.
To check supported outputs I ran xrandr:
@Vostro:~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
DVI-I-5-4 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I-4-3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I-3-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I-2-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
eDP-1-1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 194mm
1920x1080 60.05*+ 60.01 59.97 59.96 59.93 48.04
HDMI-1-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-1-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Looks like I have DisplayPort out over usb-c, checking the documentation confirms this:
One USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-C) port with DisplayPort
Ok, so thunderbolt is not happening, so DisplayPort alt it is… right?
However, after looking a bit more at the USB 3.1 Gen 1 and some more datasheets it appears that this is constrained to HBR2, this locks me to either 1x 4k30Hz or 2x 1080p60Hz. Both really suck and would not meet my requirements.
Is there a dock guru out there that could shed some light on this? Or is there some info missing?
Regards,
Nostras
