Raspberry Pi: Why It matters, and why YOU should own one!

I have 3, well I bartered one for 2 x 24 cat5e patch panels, one's now a brewpi brewing my beer, and the other a htpc.
I'm getting a rpi 2 for my uncle 1000K away from me in the country as it's super low power, and he already loves linux. I'm setting up the rpi2 for him, along with everything he needs to plug it into a hdmi tv. hdmi cable, wireless KB+Mouse set, wifi, charger, install OS, etc.

Yes. You would need to get a usb to ethernet adapter because it only comes with one ethernet port. Other than that you can follow the Tek Syndicate guide to making your own router.

You can get USB to Ethernet adapters for $5 each.

Mine currently acts as a DNS forwarding and caching server and as a means to run a wake on LAN script against my main box which is a VSFTPD server.

Great little things.

Github doesn't allow you to make free private repo's so i payed 35$ to host my own :). Never have regretted my choice!

The raspberry pi was too expensive so I bought a orange pi. What should i do with it?

No love for Odroid?? If you're ever interested in an alternative to RPi2 (hell of a lot faster alternative at that), check out odroid at hardkernel.com I have a couple of their C1 model's, it looks like they just upgraded the design to a C1+. For what you pay for, I think you get more for your money, not to mention that you have the option to use eMMC for storage which is way faster than SD.

RPi is great but Odroid is better, in my opinion.

The issue is word of mouth. The Pi has more modules. Not saying you couldn't attempt to use them though.

I use one for my Mumble server. Incredibly stable.

I reloaded my Pi with the Jessie flavour Raspbian rather than the Wheezy version. Setup again with my scripts and bind9 plus a new function. I installed a Smokeping on it. A network monitoring tool I just discovered. I have also deployed at work on Debian 8.2 x64

http://oss.oetiker.ch/smokeping/

Instructions as follows for a virtual headless Debian install but works the same on the Pi.

Login at console terminal as root (I am assuming you have your SSH access and static IP already setup)

apt-get install sudo
sudo adduser smokeping-user sudo

Login via ssh with smokeping-user

sudo apt-get install sendmail-bin
sudo apt-get install sendmail
sudo apt-get install apache2
sudo apt-get install smokeping
sudo apt-get install rrdtool
sudo apt-get install cifs-utils

cd /etc/apache2/conf-available
sudo ln -s /etc/smokeping/apache2.conf smokeping.conf

sudo a2enconf smokeping
sudo a2enmod cgid
sudo service apache2 reload
sudo service apache2 restart

cd /etc/smokeping/config.d/

sudo mkdir backup

sudo cp General backup
sudo nano General

sudo cp Alerts backup
sudo nano Alerts

sudo cp Targets backup
sudo nano Targets

sudo service smokeping restart

You should now have a functioning smokeping server currently monitoring itself on http://hostname/cgi-bin/smokeping.cgi plus whatever additional entries you added to the Targets file.

I bought my Raspberry Pi 2 kit yesterday! I got it set up with basic rasbian and already had to go into the config file and set it to 1080p. Seems like fun and with the linux and python tutorials I am working through I hope to accomplish some projects. Octoprint, internet connected garden, home automation, etc.

Lot of interesting projects in here. I will have to check back for inspiration.

This is a good thread. Does anyone have any updates they would like to share?

Yes. If you plan on buying RPi3 buy a heatsink with a fan. The temps go up to 107C. I think it's either due to the SoC or the processor being 64 bit now.

just got my rpi3 today, I'm using it now. This is my first experience with linux and I feel so lost lol.

Also, for anyone that cares, Micro center has Raspberry Pi Zero Bundles for $25, I also pick one of those up.

Any good tutorial sites/vids i should be looking at to get familiar with Linux??

Also, Temp does not seem to be an issue, although i am using heatsinks and not running much.. oh! and its also NOT in a case..

Very good places to start.

Thanks! how bout for linux?

usage explains the basics for using linux. After that I am certain you will be able to find your way around.

I could link more intricate guides, but it's 1 am and dropping dead currently. Will provide some more in the future. Btw I heard that html5 is extremely snappy with RPi3, youtube plays 1080p videos without a hitch.

There's slight screen tearing for me.. not sure if i'm missing something but it was really choppy.. but then again i cant even get sound out of my audio jack so.. yea..

edit: I might be spoiled tho, My main rig is running 980ti sli
