Randomly disappearing mouse cursor in most hardware accelerated programs

Apologies if this is in the wrong category. I don’t see one that seems more appropriate for software troubleshooting.

  1. Typically happens in full-screen games regardless of engine or resolution.
  2. Happens at random when there’s a scene change event of some kind. Sometimes often, sometimes not for hours.
  3. Mouse is still functional, and actively moving around able to interact with screen elements.
  4. Games that will on their own terms make the mouse disappear do still functionally display the mouse again when they normally would.
  5. Windowed (not borderless) causes the mouse cursor to instead flicker. This does not happen in browsers. But does happen in most other hardware accelerated programs.
  6. V-sync toggling doesn’t affect this issue.
  7. Alt-tabbing out and back makes the cursor visible again, but can promptly disappear again at random.
  8. Mouse trails are normally disabled, but enabling them seems to fix this as an annoying work-around.
  9. Mouse trails can autonomously get disabled when launching some games.
  10. I’ve already tried most if not all things suggested in the first several date-relevant results on DuckDuckGo.
  11. This is a recent symptom. About 2-3 weeks old now.

Windows 11 - debloated with ChrisTitusTech’s Windows Utility script.
AMD Ryzen 5000-series CPU
AMD Radeon 6000-series GPU
Logitech G502X mouse in on-board mode.
4K OLED 120hz display.
All drivers up-to-date.

Anecdotal info:
Issue started while attempting to benchmark several newer games as the 4k display is new, and attempting to find appropriate settings for these games. I’ve tested with and without these AMD software settings:

  1. GPU scaling enabled as Windows scaling makes the display change modes arbitrary when changing resolutions.
  2. Anti-Lag enabled.
  3. RSR enabled.
  4. Enhanced Sync enabled.
  5. Overlay disabled.
All other relevant settings or features are default or disabled.

Solved. Found out this issue was directly related to and because of the, “October Windows update triggers Bitlocker recovery and winre usb bug” issue. (Can’t post link to source.)

Manually downloaded and installed the KIR update KB5070773, and everything works properly now.

How I got the problem update and not the fix update is a mystery as I have group policy set to only accept security updates. I manually install feature updates after vetting them. My Windows should not have autonomously installed the feature update. Thanks Microsoft… You really know how to keep making Linux look more appealing.
