I've been using emulators for a while now but i have been sticking to the old consoles (nes, n64, etc). So i decided i would try out the psx2 emulator for the ps2, my question is can i just create an iso fle from my old ps2 discs and play them using the psx2?

it should be fairly simple to rip an iso off the disc, pcsx2 also has the option to run straight off the disc, though in my experience it introduces too much lag

You can actually play directly from the disk with psx2 emulator.
you just need a program like imgburn which is free to rip the iso image, pretty easy
