Proxmox Server re-do, replacing MS-01

Looking to back away from the minisforum MS-01 for my Proxmox cluster running 3 Kubernetes nodes, the mixed performance/efficiency core stability is not ready (imho)

workload:

  • all the *arrs
  • plex
  • github action worker nodes running docker builds during business hours all week!

setup:

I went through several debugging cycles to stabilize the system: https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/minisforum-ms-01-i9-13900h-96gb-with-proxmox.43380/post-425708 (user makyz) but with little luck. To summarize:

  • checked the RAM
  • updated microcode
  • disabled efficiency cores
  • disabled c states
  • flashed BIOS

tried all permutations and my longest run was 3 days with very light utilization

(yes I watched all the popular videos on the topic etc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiwD8kcjD98)

So the TLDR; I am looking to swap this out with another server to run the same workloads, I thought I would get up to five MS-01s if the first one worked out, so I am willing to go any direction with this as long as it isn’t any louder than my hl-15 (i jammed noctua fans into that sucker), and can fit on top of it 5 feet away from my desk.

definitely a victim of the youtube ms-01 hype train, but gotta get past it!

I saw @wendell recommend something that I thought could work in this thread: Planning Threadripper 7000 Build - No Kill like Overkill - #3 by wertigon

I could go in for a couple of those, probably would grab another hl15 chasis, love the look!

Appreciate any help and let me know if I left out important details!

There seems to be a 1.23 BIOS beta update for the minisforum MS-01 floating around the internet that is said to fix some of the stability issues with the mixed core architecture. I will report back when I flash it and test the stability.

I will be moving forward with something like this for my server build even if I don’t return the MS-01: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91dp5l44X8A

seems to check all the boxes except maybe a little loud!

Did you enable Intel Microcode? I have an MS01 (granted I’m still setting it up) and it’s been seemingly running fine.

Install Intel Microcode to have Proxmox support BigLittle architecture (thanks Jeff @CraftComputing!)
a) add non-free-firmware to debian repo in sources.list. Edit /etc/apt/sources.list file and add this as the first line
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian bookworm main contrib non-free-firmware
b) save changes
c) apt clean && apt update
d) apt install intel-microcode
e) reboot
f) check by running
grep ‘stepping|model|microcode’ /proc/cpuinfo

yup I ran the microcode, and updated the BIOS from Minisforum.

But I am still locking up at least once a week, its been a big let down!

Got any screens of when the machine locks up?

It might be a hardware defect. Chasing an interesting lead

Did you try using 64G instead of 96G? they do not support 96GB officially there could be a reason, I have 2 and no major issue since 3 month, only lockup I had was related to my NVDIA GPU

My MS-01 also freezes up on me at times that I must power off/on the unit manually. I guess one day my Windows will be corrupted from this type of reboot.
