Proxmox boot drive and USB DOMs

Howdy!

I’m working on a small form factor homelab build at the moment, and seeing conflicting and potentially outdated advice, so thought I’d consult some experts.

Specifically, I’m looking to run Proxmox on my server, which I’m designing primarily for compute (may expand into a NAS in the future, but I don’t have high needs). Currently, the entirety of my storage for this server is a single m.2 drive, a Crucial P3 Plus 1TB.

From what I’ve seen, Proxmox is potentially high-write on the boot drive due to status files and logs, and I’m semi-concerned this may wear out the drive at a higher rate than I’d like. I don’t care hugely about redundancy (since that would really just affect availability, I don’t intend on having any data I really care about), but I also obviously don’t want to wear out hardware for fun.

Is it worth considering a USB DOM as the boot drive instead, or is this a non-issue?

Additionally, in the year 2024, are USB DOMs still a common thing? I’ve seen various suggestions of using USB to m.2 adapters instead, as well as using either regular USB drives (such as the SanDisk Ultra Fit) or USB SSDs - DOM-wise, it seems like USB DOMs are less common than they once were (although I do see SATA DOMs). I’m pretty space (and port) constrained here though, so they may still be a good fit from that perspective.

New to all of this, so would appreciate advice! (My experience is all in the cloud where we never have to worry about hardware )

I don’t think I’m an expert but I’ve run two proxmoxes (one of them is still running) as a “hobby” (personal and not so personal dev/experiment machine) and both of them didn’t kill any drives in the span of 2+ years.

I suspect that the writes are nothing that would exceed average desktop usage.

Thanks, great to know!

(Coincidentally, someone opened a thread on almost the same thing on STH at the same time as me, if anyone wants to check that out!)

I’m tempted to try a USB DOM or similar just for the fun of it anyway, if I can source something sensible.
