Programmable display for server

Being a fan of the Flipper Zero, I got a email notice the other day about their next planned device; the Busy Bar

This thing is advertised as a programmable LED display, the primary use case is for telling people in the office not to talk to you LOL but its advertised with a full SDK to program it however you want

So of course I want to get one in order to try and program it as a Heads Up Display of sorts for my home server(s) in order to display stuff like server load, or running process stats, or whatever else I can come up with.

Of course the issue is that its not actually out yet and so you cannot buy one right now.

So I am wondering if anyone has ideas for similar types of products that could also be used like this. As a programmable HUD for your home server usages. Does not necessarily have to be LED pixel display either. In the past I had been thinking of some kind of Raspberry Pi powered LCD screen that could have customized widgets shown for my router traffic usage and such.

I did some cursory Google searches and did not find much useful info on such devices but surely people have done this before. I am wondering if anyone here has tried this type of project with other hardware and software combos.

Jeff Geerling just uploaded a video on FP on the new GeeekPi 10" rack display, linking to an Amazon listing: link

The actual display and control board can be found on Aliexpress for about half the Amazon listing, meaning you won’t get the front panel, cover and buttons on the rear:

Alternative, larger display (at higher cost, mind)

You can, but you don’t need to connect these to an RPi, anything else in your rack will do just as well

Mind, both are touchscreen units and as Jeff has proven in his video, you can use these displays for gaming. If you really, really want to :person_facepalming:

HTH

PS: go watch Jeff’s video on FP, he’s actually gaming on the GeeekPi display

Wow I think I am sold on the idea.

Ok so I had more time to look into it but it seems that it doesn’t seem to be open source aligned? While i clearly says in the preview link that it is open source, it doesn’t have a GitHub (or any git alternative) page for open development so I have to rescind my previous “Wow!” comment into a more tepid “E… ok?”

I’ll have a better reaction when it actually goes out. I am cautiously optimistic, for now.

Sounds similar to what I have done for myself.

an 7" E-ink Waveshare with an ESP8266(I forgot the model).

And made it download an image from my sbc, which has a java servlet app running, generating images.

Pros:

  • no backlight in the face (I have a regular IPS sitting in on a shelf, which introduced how much of a problem that is)
  • really good and sharp image
  • it’s a screen, so I’m limited only to BW pattern and my imagination

Cons:

  • running a server for that thing, which generates images
  • writing that server
  • (not really a cons) having the device sit in the wifi network to get data
  • a regular screen update is 15-20 seconds (the screen updates in 3-5 seconds, but the overall process, made from the sample code I found, takes the most of it).

that sounds really cool, would love to see the source code for this if its available

For which part? The e-ink screen or the server, which generates the image?

The second one is still in WIP (and I don’t have the time nor spirit to make the next update for now…).
I’m still playing with the layout, plus some of the images of the left (there is a separate logic for images depending on time and day conditions).

As can be seen, this image is overlapping with the top text on the right…

Temps and humidity (room, window) are a separate java service, which collects the data thought Shelly sensors → MQTT.
