Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE – Windows Shutdown Does Not Power Off System

I recently put together my Threadripper PC: WRX90E Sage, 9995WX, 512GB RAM, Blackwell 6000. This is my first workstation and Threadripper build, so I do have a bit of a learning curve.

Everything works as expected. Benchmarks with everything stock, no overclock, are pretty much the same as the ones posted here.

Thermals are OK, memory sticks are about 40 degrees, having mounted three Noctua mini fans, 40mm, over them using the provided brackets from ASUS until I watercool everything. Performance is what I expected from this build.

However, I am having a bit of trouble understanding the boot and shutdown speed of the build.

It takes about 30 seconds for the PC to POST, meaning the orange light on the motherboard goes green, then another 30 seconds for the “pushing firmware to OData server” plus Windows boot, until I reach the Windows 11 screen.

One issue I noticed is that the shutdown speed is pretty random, meaning that sometimes I shut down Windows and it shuts down instantly, or sometimes I have to wait for 1–2 minutes after Windows is off before the PC stops.

This morning, I shut down the PC and left for about 4 hours, and when back I realized that the PC never shut off. After the Windows shutdown, it stayed on until I came back, also confirmed from Event Viewer.

From the DHCP-Client event:
“DHCPv4 client service is stopped. Shutdown Flag value is 1”.

I would like a bit of help on this and what could cause the slow shutdown.

I recently had a similar issue with my WRX90E Sage motherboard when it was not responding to power on/off commands from the BMC. The cause was one of the power cables had been accidentally disconnected (PCIE_8P(1)_PWR in this instance). After reconnecting all of my power cables and making sure they were fully inserted into their connectors the system began following the BMC-issued power commands.

I am not running Window, and the issue I had was not exactly the same symptoms you are reporting, but I would suggest reconnecting all of the power connectors to the motherboard if you are seeing unusual power on/off behavior.

I have owned the Asus WRX90 Sage for about a year now, its a great board but it comes with its issues. I get that no shutdown problem once in a while it generally comes after a windows issue. The on board sound card tends to freak out with GFX card audio drivers is one that comes to mind. The restart issue is it sometimes likes to jump into Memory training mode which can take a while depending on how much memory you have installed. Also make sure that you are earthed before you even touch the back panel it can throw a wobbly with the slightest bit of static. The memory uses so much power you will notice that you cannot put it to sleep either, It really just likes to be left on  @ 250W idle not cheap  but its not meant to be…

Your boot speeds are reasonable considering memory context restore plus BMC initialization and synchronization.

Have you looked into updating the VBIOS on your Blackwell 6000? May be related to your shutdown issues.

Just had the hanging on shutdown error, the code that it displays is 40 which is normal but trying to wake up from Hibernation. Go into Power settings and set to ultimate performance and make sure you have Hibernation & Turn on Fast Boot un checked… doesn’t affect my boot speeds

thanks so much everyone for the replies.
switched to Ultimate plan, and deactivated all hibernate and wake features and didn’t encountered any other problems regarding shutdown, also it’s much faster than before, so this was definitely a windows issue.
